OUTA’ MY WAY—An AFI player seems to be thinking as he is over-
shadowed by a towering arm of a Rockville opponent in a hard fought
battle which AFI won 53 to 38.

Ara Parseghian Gets
Notre Dame Contract
Notre Dame has rewarded head
football coach Ara Parseghian
with a new five-year contract.
Details of the pact wei-e not re-
vealed, but the contract is be-
lieved to include a boost in salary.
Parseghian led Notre Dame to
a 9 and 1 record this season.
player eyes the hoop while in a
gallop as a Rockville man puts up
a defense. Rockville’s defeat by AFI
now turns the first place Rock-
ville five into at least a tie with
AFI. Both teams have three losses
while AFI has one more win than
Rockville.
There is nothing that makes a
person look less an athlete or
lower his reputation as a healthy
competitor in sports than for him
to continually exhibit poor sports-
manship. Don’t you be branded a
bad sport—you’ll take your team,
your division, and your service
down with you.
Bowlers Cop League Prizes
The Keflavik Civilian Bowling
League completed its season in
December with Team Three taking
first place. Team One rolled to
second place after playing off
three games for a tie with Team
Six.
In the men’s league, trophies
went to Harry Kehoe for a high
average of 172; Lou Autry —
high series with 604; Joe Gupa-
stelia — high game with 226;
Joe Stewart — high series with
handicap, 643; and John Hukill
— high game with handicap, 236.
The most improved male bowler
was Joe Stewart.
Winning trophies in the wo-
men’s league went to Ruth Weiss
with a high average of 163;
Annette Babneau — high series
with 596; Erie McCoy — high
series with handicap, 575; E.
Hocketstaller — high game with
handicap. 232. The most im-
proved female bowler was Erla
McCoy.
The Civilian League started a
new season Jan. 7.
Time passes all too quickly, at least as far as some teams in the
intramural basketball are concerned. They start the season with a
power house and end the year with barely five players.
It looks like this is happening to the Rockville team. They started
the season like the Boston Celtics. Time after time they met the
enemy and smashed them. Game after game the outcome was the
same. Rockville won and won and won.
Presently the titleseekers are in a tailspin. A loss to the Marines
was followed by a pasting by AFI. This has made the top of the
league a little tighter and just might be a premonition of things
to come.
Top Four
Right now, as far as anyone is concerned, the top four ballclubs
to be reckoned with are Rockville (at least for the next week), AFI,
57th and Security-Admin. Unless I miss my guess (and that has been
known to happen) one of these four will be the champs at the end
of the year.
57th
You can’t really pick one one team out of all the others that is
definitely the best, but you can pick one of the strongest. Out of the
top four I can think of two clubs that fit this category. One is the
57th. With Bailey and Mclntire healthy, the 57th is going to be
tough. If the league was giving a MVP it would most surely go to
Bailey.
Bailey
He’s the motor that makes the 57th victory machine run. He’s
the fuel that fills the Go tank. Just to give an example, I watched
him operate on the “Flashers” of the NavComSta one night. The
“Flashers” started fast and inside of 4 minutes had a 10-2 lead.
The Bailey went to work. In the space of 2% minutes he sank 2
long jumps, a lay-up and a couple of foul shots. With the score
knotted, he stole the ball and went in all alone for another basket
and by the time the first half ended. 20-plus points were behind
the name Bailey in the scorebook. The ComSta never quite recovered
from the brutal outburst and dropped the game.
AFI
Another team that comes to mind is AFI. They are one of the
better teams as far as teamwork is concerned. They also have a
bunch of good players. Robinson, Long and all the others make the
AFI group one to watch.
You can go down the list and pick out reasons why the other
teams have fallen out of the top spots. With the Marines it was
the loss of McCarty and Rectorivic. NavComSta lost just about
everyone of their starting five. ComBarForLant dropped out of the
league. Medical has one lone threat in Dr. Williams, but can be
counted on for an upset from time to time. About the only team
in the league to improve (and where else could they go but up)
is AFRTS.
AFRTS
AFRTS is now one of the strongest teams in the league and you
may laugh all you want, but just watch the results of the weekly
scores. Times was, ole’ AFRTS showed up with 5 guys and a lot
of hope. Now it’s 7 ballplayers and a world of confidence. Oppo-
nents ... BEWARE. AFRTS has grown a new set of teeth and they
are just looking for young, tender teams to chew up.

Action standings in the Youth
Center Bowling League finds
Team Six in first place and Team
Three in second in the Wednesday
Alley Cats’ League. Kathe and
Rod Keener took both high game
and high series for the week. Rod
had a 192 high game.
The Saturday Strike Outs League
has Team Three holding a 214-
game first place lead over second
place Team Six. Kim Wilson had
a 111 high game and 189 high
series while Keith Terry rolled a
158 high game and a 272 high
series for the week.
The League’s boy’s high aver-
age is co-shared by Mike Babneau
and Keith Terry with a 106 aver-
age. Betty Devaney has an 80
average high for the girls.
Once in a while, when discuss-
ing sportsmanship, or lack of it,
you’ll hear someone quote the
adage “Good guys never win.”
But, let’s look closely at this
adage. It does not say “Good
sports never win.” There is a
significant difference.
