OPENING TAP—Mike Cutshaw and Jim Winters get off the floor on the opening tip of the All Star
Game. Carl Mongold is the Ref. with his back to the camera. From left to right: Ed Setaro (partially
hidden), Phil Bensing (white shirt), Jim Keeney (hands on knees), Rodgers, Combs, and Webster. The
other Ref. in the background is Chet Juszcak.
Air Force Tops Navy In All Star Game;
Bailey Is High Scorer With 32 Points
by Wayne Long
B-M-B—better than T-N-T—mainly used for blasting All Star Teams—can be stored
just about anywhere—comes in three different sizes and it’s all deadly—use in small
quantities.
Bailey, Mclntire, and Bensing—the B-M-B that took the Navy All Stars over the
coals and burned them to the tune of 98-91
Rich Bailey, hitting 9 shots
half, put on most of the offensive'*1'
show for the Air Force. Bailey
finally wound up with 32 points
for the night and didn’t even play
the last 10 minutes. Tough luck
in the foul department got Rich
an early shower, but before he
left, his shots fairly burned the
cords off the basket. At least 8
of his 11 field goals were the 30
foot variety. He played much of
the game against the best de-
fensive men the Navy could send
out on the court.
“Mac” Mclntire, scoring all 11
of his points in the second half,
was one of the biggest reasons
for the win by the Air Force.
“Mac” came off the bench near
the end of the game and helped
the Air Force All Star preserve
their victory when he took part in
the “cold storage freeze” put on
from the floor and 5 for 5 from the foul line in the first
by the team. “Mac” wheeled off
on the fast break several times
for some of his 11 tallies and
this added to the Air Force threat.
Last, but by no means least,
is Phil Bensing. Phil was second
high scorer for the night with
25 markers. It was a jumper from
the corner by Bensing that broke
the scoring ice for the Air Force
and his clutch shooting in the
second half when Bailey had
fouled out of the game. Phil had
10 baskets and 5 out of 6 free-
throws for his 25.
These three men all come from
the 57th FIS and it’s no wonder
they are tied for fourth place in
the intramural league. If you can
add, you will find that these
three men scored 68 of the 98,
and if you add the 9 points scored
QUICK TWO—While the front of the basket gathers a pile of players,
Ray Lauriano slips in the side door for a quick two points. Ray got
6 and the Air Force Team beat the Navy by a score of 98-91.
by Webster (also of the 57th)
you will get a total of 77. Not
bad for a night’s work.
On the other side of the score-
book we find the Navy All Stars.
Not a bad team by any stretch
of the imagination, but just un-
fortunately 57th’ed. The big man
for the Navy was Jim Keeney.
Jim has come a long way since
he first started for AFRTS in
the intramural league and now
has become one of the big threats
for the Navy.
Jim hit for 21 points on the
evening and showed a real good
drive to the defenders. He also
dumped in several jumps from
around the 15 foot level. I hear
from the people who were trying
to stop that shot, that it’s very
hard. “Good moves,” is the way
most of the Air Force people
referred to it.
Another reason for the loss by
the Navy was the health status
of Mike Cutshaw. Mike had suf-
fered a little accident earlier in
the week and although he suited
up for the game it was evident
he hadn’t fully recovered. Mike
missed three foul shots and that’s
something that just doesn’t hap-
pen. Even with his injury, Mike
was still third high scorer on the
team with 13 points.
The All Stars got a good game
out of Ed Setaro before he fouled
out. Ed has the best eyes on the
All Star team. His passes set up
a lot of scores for the Navy and
his 17 points sure didn’t hurt the
cause any.
Actually, this was the third
game the two teams had played
and the Navy did win the first
two. It’s too bad the Navy had
to run into B-M-B. It would have
been a easy night if they hadn’t
been in the gym.

By the time this paper appears
in print, the Navy All Star Team
will be in Norfolk, Va. The team
will be playing in the regional
basketball tournament for the
honor and glory and anything else
that goes with being on the team.
Dr. Williams has the job of
player-coach for the Naval Sta-
tion team. “Doc” has done a real
fine job of coaching the talent on
hand into a tight ballclub. He
takes a club to the tourney that
might just win a few games be-
fore they roll over and play dead.
Leading the team will be two
big men, Mike Cutshaw and Jim
Keeney. Both men are about 6’4”
and can jump about 11’ into the
air. Both players have deadly
jump shots and Mike is good with
a hook shot. From the foul line
Cutshaw just doesn’t miss. Last
week in a game against AFI Mike
hit 8 foul shots without missing.
Another big man is Ed Setaro.
Ed is also in the 6’ plus class and
has the best “eyes” on the team.
Ed is a real good shooter and a
better passer. His passes are al-
ways right there. With him in
the passing department is Graves
of the Sec-Admin ballclub. Graves
is another good passer and a fine
ball-handler.
Up in front court will be Sal
Muro of the Marines. Sal is an-
other good shooter and has a
soft touch from around 15 to 20
feet. He will be joined by second
member of the Cprps, Hal Vincion.
Hal will probably move to the
backcourt on this ballclub. Hal is
usually the strongest threat the
Marine team has in the intra-
mural league. He is a six-footer
too.
The club left Wednesday, the
27th of January and will be in
Norfolk until about the eighth of
February. If they win a few,
which I think they will, they
could be gone for sometime.
A few short hops and skips
around the sports scene now. One
thing that should be commented
on is the fast way the Medical
department came up in the intra-
mural league. They brushed past
two strong teams for wins. AFRTS
felt the cold scalpel first and AFI
was on the receiving end of the
next blast. Then Medical ran into
Rockville. That 11 game winning
streak didn’t seem to impress
Rockville any. Medical will have
to start fresh again. Tough luck.
Speaking of Rockville .... it
seem to me that about two weeks
ago I said they were on the skids.
They just skidded back into first
place. Some skid.
Also while we are on an Air
Force team it might be an idea to
let our readers know the Air Force
All Stars didn’t get a chance to
show off their team. They didn’t
(to use an Air Force term) “get
a chance to taxi.” If someone
knows, they’re not saying. I could
not find out why the team wasn’t
going... .only that they weren”t.
