Pint-Sized Package
Puts Punch In Play
by Tim Vincent
CROSSED RACKETS—Preparing for the Naval Station Badminton
Singles Tourney Championship match are Kay L. Norris (left) and
Richard Galvez (right). Galvez, who previously defeated Norris in
a three-set match, pulled through the victor as Norris copped second
place. Ralph Weymouth finished third. The three men will be awarded
trophies at an awards presentation upon completion of the doubles

the ballplayers of Alfred T.

Player of the

dan. Bill, a small

played a vital role in the Vikings
fine showing in the past few
weeks.
INTRAMURAL
STANDINGS
The Naval Station intra-
mural basketball league stand-
ings as of Feb. 10 with only
a few remaining games left
finds the top four teams in a
close battle for the league
crown. AFI, which was in
third place three weeks ago,
roared to the top spot with
three wins in a row. Sec/Admin
still holds the second place po-
sition. The big shocker is the
rise and fall of Rockville these
past weeks. Although the men
from Rockville were one and
one, that one loss was 12th
place NavSecGru by one point
63-62! Also, AFI’s surpris-
ing surge caught most teams by
surprise. The airmen of the
57th after shellacking VP-23,
90-68 and scoring 57 tallies in
the first half are still in fourth
place but in contention.

Bill, teamed up with Bill Rod-
gers in the backcourt, is not an
avid scorer or a potent rebounder.
It’s his keen thinking and all
around team play that contribute
to the Vikings success. Little Billy
quite regularly sets up many a
two-pointer with pinpoint passes
and quick reactions to the play
at hand.
Only a sophomore, Bill plans to
attend Texas A&M upon gradua-
tion and study to be a veterinar-
ian. His father is a Master Chief
Yeoman, and his mother works at
Special Services. He is currently
picking up a little pocket money
by working weekends at Andrews
Theater as a janitor.
Bill will be around next season
playing for the Vikings and as
usual giving his best. And so it
is with great pleasure that we
give a well deserved “Hats Off”
to Bill Jordan for a job well done.

The muddle at the top of the
League is slowly clearing up.
Doubt and confusion are floating
away, and truth is coming to light.
The end is just around the cor-
ner.
Rockville vs NavSecGru
Rockville is reeling again, but
don’t give up hope .... because
every time I write something about
them, it always turns out the
other way. I said once, they were
on the skids. So the team turned
around and skidded back into a
tie for first place. Then I said
they had a good chance to win
and Rockville turned right around
and lost to NavSecGru.
Don’t take anything away from
NavSecGru either. Right now they
are the hottest team in the league.
The team has knocked off AMD
and now Rockville in two import-
ant games.
AMD
True, it took an overtime with
AMD and only one point over
Rockville, but 8 months from now,
who’s going to remember?? Also
a win by any other name is still
a win.
This was a BIG game for Rock-
ville. I suppose one of the major
reasons for the loss was the ab-
sence of Jim Winters in the line-
up. Those boards are plenty im-
portant. One other thing ....
AFRTS is coming along. If they
beat Rockville, the winners trophy
won’t leave the base. It could go
to AFI or Security-Admin ....
but a team with 7 losses won’t win
the League title. Bet on that.
Navy All-Stars
Looking elsewhere, I see the
Navy All Star team is back. So
far I haven’t had a chance to talk
to Dr. Williams, but keep watch-
ing for something on the team.
Apparently the fellows didn’t
fare too well. This won’t be much
of a surprise to some of the
people on the base. Expect to hear
a lot of “I told you so’s”. What-
ever is said, the team was still
a good one. You can bet they
didn’t lay down and quit. To use
a favorite expression of the teams
in the American League (base-
ball).... “Wait until next year.”
Roll-Off Tourney
This week’s thought: Bowlers
can keep those arms limbered up
for the roll-off tourney. From
the word that’s out .... seven of
those lucky types will be going to
Bainbridge, Md., for the All Navy
Finals. See you there.
Good and bad sportsmanship is
not relegated to the field of play
alone. Fans, especially in intra-
mural sports, can exhibit some
pretty bad sportsmanship from
time to time. Although it happens
sometimes in varsity sports, it is
usually the intramural program
when the unnecessary insults fly
from one group to another about
the teams as a whole, about indi-
vidual players or sometimes even
about a sister service. Good hard
competition, good loud rooting,
and good “back your team” spirit
are necessary in sports. This is
desirable. Bad sportsmanship is
undesirable.
ALL EYES WATCH—As Viking ballplayer Tom Starbird leaps high
in an attempt to block jumpshot by Peck of the Naval Security Group
team. NavSecGru nipped the Alfred T. Mahan Vikings 48-47 in a
closely fought battle.
