Volleyball Serve Loses Points In Intramural League Play (Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles on the finer points in playing volleyball.) by Robert E. Blade It ought to be fairly easy to hit a volleyball over an eight- foot high net into a court thirty feet square. Yet poor serv- ing is a common failure and is a deciding factor in almost every volleyball game. It does a team little good to play hard to win the serve and then lose it with a bad serve. One should remember that a team cannot score a point unless it can put the ball into play*^ with a good serve. The serve must be mastered by every player on the team. The rules do not require the server to hit the ball a certain way when serving. The server may use his fist, open hand, fingers or heel of the hand. He may face the court or serve with his back to it. However it is generally best to face the court squarely with both feet at least two feet behind the backcourt line. The server must be careful not to step on or over the backcourt line until he has made contact with the ball. Once he has hit the ball he should step quickly into the court and assume a defensive position. There are three standard serves: the underhand, overhand and roundhouse. The underhand serve is the most consistent and most easily controlled serve. The ball should move up and over the net giving the opposition little time to look at it. Some servers use a sidearm serve which is difficult to control because its trajectory is horizontal to the playing surface. The sidearm is not recommended. The underhand serve is executed by placing the ball in the palm of the left hand (for right-handers) and swinging the right arm for- ward and upward, hitting the ball into the air. Normally the server should attempt to hit the ball to the center of the back court of the opposing team. This is the (Continued on page 7.) Bowlers Roll For Top Spots by Annette Babneau.
