AMERICANS VS ICELANDERS — Four golfers who competed against
each other in the Golf Tournament held June 26 and 27 in Akureyri
talk about the game. They are (from 1 to r) Maj. Richard A. Fite,
(USA), Iceland Defence Force plans officer, Mr. Hermann Ingimars-
son, former Icelandic Golfing Champion, Lt Robert H. Nelson, Naval
Station dental officer, and Mr. Magnus “John” Gudmundsson, present
golfing champion of Iceland. (Photo by Wirth, PH3)
Icelandic Golf Team
Defeats U.S. Players
The Defense Force golf team took a thrashing at the
hands of the Akureyri golf team during a tournament held
in that city June 27.
Only two of the 14 Americans, TSgt. Kenneth D. Faust,
USAF, of the 57th FIS and Norman R. Martin, CEC, of
NavSta’s telephone maintenance department, warded off
defeat.
Sergeant Faust won a narrow'^
victory over Haflide Gudmundsson
while Chief Martin managed to
break even with his opponent,
Gisli Magnusson.
In one of the tournament’s bet-
ter matches, Maj. Richard A. Fite,
USA, captain of the American
team, took on the Icelandic cham-
pion, Magnus Gudmundsson —
who proved with a few deft
swings why he is champion.
Excellent Showing
Hermann Ingimarsson and Lt
Richard H. Nelson, DC, USN, of
NavSta’s dental department also
provided a good match. Lieutenant
Nelson made an exellent showing
in losing to the former Icelandic
champion.
Other American golfers who
played in the tournament were:
LCdr R. C. Westfall, Op Maint;
Lt G. P. Nichols, Dent Dept;
LCdr R. M. Galvez, IDF Compt;
Lt G. E. Mariano, VfP-8; G. T.
Alverson, SKC Supply; John
Besser, SN, VW-13; H. E. Hoff-
man, CMCS, P. W. (Trans);
SMSgt. Davis, 57th FIS; G. L.
Gittings, AN, Wpns Dept; and

First Trip
It was the first trip to Akur-
eyri for the American golfers.
They were invited to Akureyri for
the tournament by the Akureyri
Chapter of the Icelandic-Ameri-
can Society (I-A).
The golfers arrived via Naval
Station aircraft in Akureyri early
Saturday, June 26. Greeting them
on their arrival were Jon Egilsson,
president of the Akureyri Chapt-
er, I-A Society, and Hjortur Ei-
riksson, chairman of the Akureyri
Chapter, Vardberg Society.
The Naval Station Band, who
accompanied the golfers, were also
hosted by the I-A Society. Dur-

Keflavik Softball Teams Face
Tough Schedule Of Opponents
by L.B. Weatherford
The hotly contested Intramural Softball League play
continues to roll merrily along with 30 games completed
in each league. Flashy Rockville shows the way in the
National League, closely hounded by BarLant and Security
Group.
The American League has the undefeated 57th nine-
reigning at the top of the roost, with CommSta, Marines
and AFI in contending positions.
Dogged BarLant upset the high-
flying and previously undefeated
Rockville team to the tune of 6
to 2.
After being victims of a fine
no-hitter administered by pitcher
Bersan and the AFI team, VP-56
bounced back and stunned the
slugging Marines with a 16 to 1
tab.
Daily Games
Outstanding pitching perform-
ances and slugging marathons
have alternated in highlighting
and adding spice to the daily
games.
Operations, IDF, Comptroller,
and Weapons all displayed a con-
sistent brand of play indicating
potential winners on any given
occasion.
Batting star of recent games
has been Zimmerman of Rockville,
who recently blasted two out of
the park and was credited with
7 RBI’s in one game.
Next issue will include individual
batting and pitching statistics in
all categories.
Pitching Plus Home Runs
Spark Little League Play
by D.J. McNamara
W. Grover was in mid-season form in beating the Tigers
for his second win as many starts. This time he put a
little salt in the wounds by pitching a no hit, no run game.
R. Heller continued his long ball hitting by putting four
balls out of the park. In one other game he had three home
runs.
Home runs out of the park, and no hit, no run games are
really something to see—but all^
in one night?
W. Grover also struck out 14
hitters. Only three men reached
first base to mar an otherwise per-
fect game. On the other side of the
fence, it was just a bad night
all the way around for the
Tigers. Final score Dodgers 17,
Tigers 0.
Yankees
On Tuesday the Yankees came
on for their first win by beating
the Braves 12 to 1. D. Rogers
was the winning pitcher and J.
Conley was the loser. Rogers
struck out 14 while pitching a
4-hitter. The Yankees came up
with a big 8-run third inning. J.
Westley had two 3-baggers while
Voorhees also contributed two
hits in their big uprising in the
third.
The Yankees must have liked
their first win as they added
their second the following night
against the Tigers. Once more
they had a big 8-run inning, the
second. Trailing by one run in
the bottom of the sixth, they
picked up two big ones making
the final score Yankees 11, Tigers
10.
Well Played Game
It was a well played game all
the way. L. Jones was the winning
pitcher and M. Babneau the loser.
Hitting honors went to Scott and
Greer, each with home runs J.
Soper came through with a triple.
R. Hoffman looked real good for
the Tigers in the three innings he
pitched, allowing only one run
and one hit, and striking out six.
Thursday night the Dodgers kept
up their winning ways, making it
six in a row in the cool, rainy
weather. Long and Barbacci
shared the pitching honors for the
Dodgers and J. Buchanan was the
loser for the Braves. The game
didn’t see any home runs but a
lot of walks instead. Final score
in this one was Dodgers 14, Braves
8. .
Remember, enjoying the game
is running the bases, hitting and
fielding. Be a team-man.

Team Five has taken a first
place lead in the Youth Strikers

ing in second place.

The teams occupying the first place slots in the American
and International Leagues were toppled from their thrones
this past week.
Supply 2, American League, having dominated the first
place position of this league since the beginning of the
second half tasted the bitter pill of defeat at the hands
of the IDF Team. This loss of1^
three points permitted the second
place team of AMD 1, after a
victory of four points to assume
the top position of the American
League.
Tied For First
Security of the International
League, much in the same posi-
tion as Supply 2, lost three points
to the able 57th FIS team. This
defeat opened the door for VP-56
and Admin 2 to enter into a tie
for the number one position of
their league.
It is good to see new names
added to the list of high scorers
of the various leagues. This past
week the high series was tossed by
Jones, VP-56, International Lea-
gue, with an outstanding pin fall
of 216/205-612, two pins ahead of
his teammate Brundage who re-
corded a 212-610.
Colvin Topples 248
High game and two pins short
of the Artie Bowl magic number
‘250” was rolled by Colvin, NCS
3, International League, with a
248... so close.
Individual league scores had the
American League keglers on the
mark with pocket hits and fine
scores. Money, Admin, 1, capped
all honors with a 234-592 total
with teammate Howell adding to
the team pinfall with 521.
The NavCommSta 1 Team scor-
ed heavy behind Nyeholt 215-584,
Dale 529 and McComb 536.
Norris, AMD 1, always a threat,
hit thin and watched them spin
for a 207/212-590.
