BIRD LIFE—The peace and beauty of the duck pond lends itself to a natural habitat of many species of birds. north, thus giving the impression of a large inland lake. Urban civilization and the wild freedom of nature are here har- moniously blended, and a warm welcome awaits all visitors. Most foreign visitors come here, if they want to really get to know Iceland and its people. It is a particularly clean, tidy and friend- ly town. The weather is often very mild and the vegetation is surprisingly luxuriant. The visitor to Akureyri can choose between four hotels, and even if they should be full, he can always obtain through one of the hotels a clean, comfortable room in a private house. He can also camp at a special camping site in the town which has running water, toilet facilities and tele- phone, and the camp attendant will give him any information he may need. Hotel Ivea This is the best known hotel outside Reykjavik. It is usually full in summer and bookings start arriving early in the year. It has recently been redecorated and modernized. The first floor has a lounge, grill-room and bar. On the second floor is a dancehall for 200 and a conference room for 50 people. The manager, Mr. Ragnar Ragnarsson, is a young man who studied cooking and catering in Switzerland. The menu includes fifty Icelandic and foreign dishes and there is thus something to suit every taste. Hotel Vardborg This is a temperance hotel run by the IOGT, the teetotallers’ as- sociation, the only one of its kind in Iceland. Managed by Mr. Stefan A. Kristjansson, the hotel concentrates on efficient inexpen- sive service without alcohol, and good food and light refreshments can be obtained in the adjoining Cafe Scandia. Bookings are heavy in summer, especially from Brit- ain, Scandinavia and Germany. The hotel will supply all tourist information and arrange sight- seeing tours, documentary film showings on Iceland or almost anything in which a visitor may be interested. Hotel Vardborg also runs a small, cozy snack-bar—the Flugkaffi—on Akureyri airport, open all the year around. The Hlidarfjall Ski Hotel A comfortable, modern hotel situated about three miles from Akureyri at an altitude of 1500 feet above sea level, it has an excellent skiing terrain and ski- lift. Open throughout the year, it is also a convenient center in summer for walks and climbs in the surrounding hills and moun- tains, from where there are won- derful views of North Iceland. Menntaskoli Summer Hotel This is really the students’ hos- tel of the Akureyri High School which is used as a hotel for visi- tors in summer. It is very popular, inexpensive, clean and comfort- able. The Sjalfstaedishusid Restaurant This is the newest restaurant in Akureyri, opened in the sum- mer of 1963. It provides first class food, service and a cozy atmos- phere. The main room can seat large parties, but small groups, may, if they prefer, use smaller, (Continued on page 6.) “BIG BEN” OF AKUREYRI—Chimes from the towers of the Akureyri Church (Lutheran State Church of Iceland) are heard throughout the day. The Kea Hotel on the left is usually full of tourists during the summer montths. GOING MY WAY?—Bicycling is quite popular in Akureyri and if one peddles hard and long enough up the hills, the ride down is worthwhile. le stadium in the heart of town. Here, Denmark vies STADIUM CROWS—Every Sunday soccer matches or field competition take place at Akureyri’s modern stadium. ftd £u?wwny pc cl A £ki £c4$eA HcteU ...
