Betty Buchanan carried away
top honors for the week in the
Tuesday Womens’ League with a
168 game and a 459 series.
The Tagalongs are in first place
followed closely by the Hopefulls.
Annette Babneau holds a 153 aver-
age to lead the league in that de-
partment.
Top Slot
Team 6 holds down the top slot
in the Keflavik Civilian League
with the Sand Baggers trailing
in second place. Polly Kuipers’449
series was the best for the week
and Erla McCoy rolled a 170 for
high game on the womens side of
the ledger. For the men, A1 Bab-
neau captured high game and
series with a 208/563.
Mixed Couples
A tight race is forecast for the
Iceland Mixed Couples League
with the Sandbaggers in first place
and a four way tie for the second
position. Jack Warren spun a 185/
555 to lead the men this week
while Annette Babneau’s 185/492
was best for the girls. High aver-
age for the men belongs to Hal
Hoffman with 181 while Jean
Jordan has a 155 average to top
the ladies.
The Tuesday Womens’ League is
in need of women bowlers to sub-
stitute. Those interested are asked

BarLant, led by the overpower-
ing pitching of Ernie Arceneaux,
defeated the Marine Barracks in
the Keflavik Intramural Softball
League World Series last weekend
in two games.
The series was played Saturday
and Sunday at the ball diamond
and was broadcast live over Armed
Forces Radio by sports commenta-
tors Wayne Long and Clate Tor-
beck.
Scores On Walk
The first game started out with
the Marines scoring in the first
inning on a walk, a hit batsman
and two errors. The score remain-
ed that way until the fifth when
Red Rollinson led off for Bar-
Lant with a single. Then with one
out, Stan Alexander and Arcen-
eaux got on with the help of Ma-
rine errors, Rollinson scoring on
the second one. Tim Vincent then
unloaded a two run single to make
the score 3-1.
The Marines came up with a run
in the eighth when Bob Montieth
walked and moved around the
bases on two passed balls and a
throwing error. But the Marines
couldn’t manage Arceneaux and
his slants in the ninth inning, so
the final score was 3-2 in favor
of the BarLant team.
No-Hitter
Arceneaux had a no-hitter and
struck out 15 Marines and the
only problem he encountered was
wildness as he walked four men.
The hitting stars for BarLant
were Vincent and Rollinson, each
with two hits. Rick Warfel pitched
an excellent game, allowing only
five hits but sloppy fielding cost
him the game.
The second game pitted the same
two pitchers in a rematch of the
first game. The Marines drew
first blood when Frank Brotowsky
was hit by a pitch, moved up to
by Dave Jones
third on two passed balls and
scored on a fielders’ choice. Bar-
Lant came back in their half of
the first when Bill McConnell
slapped a single to left, stole sec-
ond, moved to third on a sacrifice
fly and came home on an error to
tie the score at 1 all.
Marines First Hit
The Marines got their first hit
off Arceneaux in the third when
Bob Russel smashed a triple to
center with one out. Arcenaux
then settled down to get the next
two men without damage.
BarLant moved ahead in the
fourth when Andy Galipeau led
off with a single and moved to
third on two throwing errors. Stan
Alexander then unloaded a triple
to left and he scored on a sacri-
fice fly by Arceneaux to give Bar-
Lant the lead 3-1.
TAKING HIS CUTS—BarLant player Tim Vincent fans on this pitch
by Rick Warfel of the Marines during the second game of the World
Series. However, Vincent was the hitting star of the first game and
his daring base running in the second game helped spark the big
BarLant rally that led to the Marine’s downfall.
The Marines closed the gap to
one run in the sixth when Pete
Clingan doubled and came home
when Warfel singled.
BarLant Explodes
The floodgates opened up on
the Marines in the eighth inning
when BarLant exploded for five
big runs. In the eighth, Vincent
started the inning with a walk.
Then with one out, Rollinson
singled, moving Vincent to third.
Alexander then hit a dribbler back
to the mound for what appeared
to be an easy out. But Vincent
made a move toward home and
Warfel threw home but Vincent
moved back to third and everyone
was safe. Fred Fredericks cracked
a double to left scoring two and
another run. McConnell hit a long
fly to left to score Fredericks
with Arceneaux moving to second.
Bob Vargo completed the scoring
with a single to right to score
Arceneaux with the final tally to
make it 9-2.
Arceneaux moved the Marines
down in the ninth without any
trouble to bring BarLant the
championship.
Big Difference
It wouldn’t be fair to credit just
one man, but Ernie Arceneaux
with 30 strikeouts and a no-hitter
and four-hitter in 18 innings, was
the big difference. Red Rollinson
was the hitting star with four hits
in the two games. The fielding
gem of the series was made by
Second Baseman John Green when
he took a hit from Bill Everhart
of the Marines during the second
game.
The star for the Marines was
pitcher Rick Warfel who pitched
his heart out and with the excep-
tion of errors made by him and
his teammates, they could have
been the winners.
