Capture World Series With Rabel ln
Next Mitt Show
The St. Louis Cardinals chalked up their fifth
World Series triumph in hasehall history by de-
feating their city rivals, the Browns, four games
to two in the 1944 classic which ended last Mon-
day. Their conquest of the Browns gave the Cards
their second world title in the last three years
The Cards had to come
from behind twice dur-
ing the series to take
the crown from the game
Browns.
After watching Luke
Sewell's charges regis-
ter a 3-1 decision in
the opening tilt on two
hits, the Cards evened
the count with an ele-
ven inning 3-2 victory
ln the second fray.
Jack Kramer put the
Browns ahead once more
with a 6-2 victory in
the third game, but the
Cards tied it up again
in the fourth battle on
Harry Breechen's twirl-
ing, 5-1.
Billy Southworth and
his boys forged to the
front in the fifth tilt
with a 2-0 win on Mort
Cooper's superb pitch-
ing, and then
the series with their
3-1 verdict ln the fol-
lowing game.
Pitching featured the
series throughout, the
twirlers striking out
92 sluggers to set a
new series record.

Memos which help clog the keys and turn out a
column! This corner nominates Luke Sewell as the
sports man of the year....His last eight pinch-
hitters struck out in the World Series which in-
dicates one of the many problems he had to over-
come before entering the autumnal classic.
We also nominate Slats Marion of the Cards
and Vern Stephens of the Browns as the hero
and goat respectively....Very succinctly,the
lanky Marion showed Stephens how to play be-
tween third and second - and he was nursing
an attack of influenza through the series.
Just a thought while listening to the games---
could the new strikeout record (92) be traced to
the many night games which both teams played in
the regular season?....Before the series, hotel
reservations were made in Detroit by the Cards
who picked the Tigers in the American loop.
Manny Balk of the Signal Corps reminds us
that the last city series was NOT in 1922 as
we stated last week but in 1941 when the BY
Yankees and Brooklyn took to the subway.....
Best fielder throughout the series seemed to
be the fan who caught all those fouls.
Note to Hardy Montooth, Johnny IXincan and Lou
Bencette: - try and get a November copy of BING
magazine - your pictures grace one of the pages
and there's a story, too....We'll probably see
you next Saturday night in another ring — which
will provide copy for another column.

With the season less
than two weeks old,com-

IBC basketball circuits
has exacted a terrific
toll.

of a clean slate in the

clubs have perfect re-

ond all season.
The Tigers displaced
the Needlers in "B“ and
the Eight Balls slipped
past the Alertments in
"C."
The Bed Legs and the
Thunderbolts held their
top spots in nD" and in
"E" respectively.
For the second week
in a row new kegle rec-
