GOVERNMENT ROUSE
Government House
across from Heckla Sq-
uare in Reykjavik, was
originally built as a
jail in 1764.
It was used as a
gaol until the turn of
the 18th century at
which time it became
the residence and off-
ice of the Danish Gov-
ernor of Iceland. It
continued to be used
for that purpose until
1904. The first Resi-
dent Minister in Ice-
land was appointed at
ths.tr time and he sub-
sequently took over
Government House for
the use of his off-
ices. In 1939 a coal-
'ition government was
formed, with the crea-
tion of five Ministry
offices, -several of
jthem then making their
.offices there.
1 At the present time
it houses the offices
of the Prime Minister
and Minister of Fore-
ign Affairs, the Mini-
ster of Justice and
the Minister of Educa-
tion.
The two statues in
front of Government
House are of King Ch-
ristian IX of Denmark,
on the left and Hermes
Hafstein on the right.
Christian IX is so ho-
nored for his assist-
ance in giving Iceland
its first seperate
constitution in 1874,
indirectly contribut-
ing to its first step
towards independence.
Hafstein is remembered
as the first Resident
Minister in Iceland in
1904 and also as an
outstanding Icelandic
poet, a combination of
talents which has many
parallels among prom-
inent Icelanders.

SENATOR OFFERS
BILL FOR UNIFORM
DIVORCE LAW
Desiring to see an
"end to the Mexican and
Reno divorce mills,"
Senator nilliam Langer
(R.-N.D.) has requested
the Senate Judiciary
Committee to act on the
Capper bill which would
set up uniform marriage
and divorce regulations
for the nation.
Under the bill, which
was introduced in 1943,
the marriageable ages
for men would be 18 -
with parental consent
for those under 21. Gi-
rls could marry at 16 -
with parental consent
for those under 18.
The proposed bill
would limit divorce gr-
by the end of the year.
It is estimated that by
that time there will be
sufficient service pil-
ots, combat pilot vet-
erans, and pilots newly
graduated from training
to fill all such assig-
nments.
