Char- lie Congdon, second, strok- ed hack Byron Nelson and Jug McSpaden to gain the runner-up postion. Tied for 32 strokes, McSpaden led off and missed a four foot put on the 18th — which would have given him a second place tie. 'eightIalls/ HOT SHOTS* TOP IBC KEGLERS With the passing of seven da}rs, the “Eight Balls” have blazed an even brighter lum- ber path on IBC alleys. They bettered, their team-total- score by 215 pins and topped their best five man game bjr 28 pins. The following to- tals show that the “Eight Balls” are improving with each ball thrown: Team total — 1939. Best five man single game — 671. Cpl. Paul C. Schmitt of Washington, D.C., proved himself the hot shot of the “Hot Shots” bowling five. This B League kegler rolled a fancy single game of 190 and a three game high of 453 to dethrone S/Sgt. Arthur W. Mary, Pittsburgh Pa., of the “Eight Balls.” IBC League A leaders are the “Eight Balls.” B League is paced by the “Alertments,” C by the “Yanks” and D is tied with the Navy and “Firebugs.” Andy Riccardi, Veteran |BC Slugger, Leaves Ring The Assistant Sports Edit- or wishes Pvt. Andy Riccardi a right merry GleSilegjol and a Happy New Year. The Assistant Sports Editor feels he is shouting these holi- day greetings for the many enthusiastic Riccardi root- ers. And, the A.S.E. extends the most of the best to the Chester, Pa., heavy because of the excellence of his fisti- cuffing abilities and his will to give his watchers the most of his best leather attributes. Leave us join the Assi- stant Sports Editor as he takes you back to Andy’s initial bout in Iceland. The date was Dec. 4, 1943 and the place was the Andrew Fieldhouse. His opponent was Pfc. Herman Lanier, the strongly-touted hard-hitting FA scrapper from Wilming- ton, N.C. However, Pvt. R. had no respect whatsoever for rank and belted Pfc. Lanier from post to pillar and back again. His Golden Glove experience in the City of Brotherly Love stood him in good stead and from Bout One on he was a crowd teaser and a “must” on each succeeding program. On Dec. 18. 1943, at preci- sely 2105 hours, the Field- house resounded with a terrific roar from 1,700 thro- ats as Riccardi and S/Sgt, Frankie Albano climbed through the ropes to do battle — and what a battle! Pvt. Andy Riccardi, who announced his retirement from the IBC ring, prepares a healthy right wallop to the jaw of Pvt. Earl Zimmer- man, during a recent boxing Messers Gordon Sabine and Jack Glenn, ringside judges, voted for Albano and arbit- er Robert Stretch gave his nod to “Rick.” So, by - the closest of margins, this three heat beauty went to the brill- iant Albano who later be- came the IBC Heavyweight Champion and took three from the best that the ETO had to offer at the Rainbow Corner. Did this close defeat rile our “Rick?” A thousand times “nei!” (“No,” in Ice- landic.) He came back two weeks later and took a close decision from the same man who had decisioned him! U.S. SPORTSWRITERS PICK ALL-AMERICAN PRO GRID TEAM Falling right into line with the All-American mood, the Sportswriters of America picked the following Pro Football All-American eleven: LE Don Hutson , Green Bay LT Frankie Cope NY Giants LG Riley Mathewson Cleveland Rams C “Bulldog” Turner Bears RG Len Younce * NY Giants RT A1 Wistert Phila. Eagles RE Joe Aguirre Wash. Redskins QB Roy Zimmerman Phila. Eagles LF Frankie Sinkwich Detroit RI4 Wajd Cuff NY Giants FB Bill Paschall NY Giants BEARS. NAVY Trojans 48 TAKE LEAD IN Rangers 33 IB€ HOOP LEAGUES Navy 36 As the new IBC basketball Panthers 35 season gets under way, the Bears 61 Bears and the Navy have Fess 33 taken an early lead — both teams being tied for first Flyers 41 place. Results: Rangers 17 Commandos 58 Bears 53 Trojans 40 Trojans 28 Bears 67 Panthers 29 Flyers 28 Commandos 24 Because Riccardi showed so much spirit, willingness and spark, whether he won or lost, he was chosen by the Command to be one of the six U.S. Army repres- entatives to promote the fistic art against the most proficient leather-flingers in the ETO. So it came to pass that in March, 1944, Pvt. Andrew Riccardi of the Signal Corps laced his eight ounce gloves on no fewer than three oc- casions in eight days! He was pitted against Roy Hanna in his first go. Roy was former Eastern AAU Champ and Tulsa AAU Champ. Andy obviously did not read the clippings be- cause he clipped Roy fast and hard and copped the duke. His next Rainbow Corner, London, opponent was Pvt. Ralph Hallinger of Cleve- land, Ohio. Andy hit Hall- inger and Hallinger hit the floor. Net result: another win for “Rick.” On March 24, Riccardi met a fgllow Keystone Stater when he hit Pvt. Bob Lewis of Wilkes Barre around and about the features. Not ac- cording to Emily Post, but as your Assstant Sports Edi- tor has said previously, “Rick” confines his reading to his own personal clipp- ings. So it was, that the pride of Chester, Pa., met three men in eight days and won all three bouts — which is a percentage of 1000% ! The A.S.E. will now use a colloquialism (at no in- crease in subscription rates). This fighter did not permit the laurel wreath to tarnish. He fought seven times after his return from the wars and won six — a percentage of 845 — which is better lb an average — even for the Iceland Base Command lea- gues. It was with profound re- gret then that the A.S.E. read of Pvt. Andrew Riccardi’s re- tirement from the squared circle in the Organization News of last week’s White Falcon. The hearts of the many fistic followers will be heavy with sorrow — some may even don the sackcloth and ashes — but (as they would have us say on the plains of Oklahoma) C’est la Guerre! Typing for Iceland’s foll- owers of the manly art, the Assistant Sports Editor off- ers Pvt. Andrew Riccardi a smart salute for always giv- ing us his very best while in his green tights!
