A Meditation

“Let the favor of the Lord our God he upon us, and establish
tlxou the work of our hands upon us, yea, the work of our hands
establish thou it.” (Psalm 90:17)
“What shall I render to the Lord for all his bounty to me?”
(Psalm 116:12)
“And for this cause came I into the world.” (John 18:37)
Every person has some mission to fulfill — some divinely
appointed task to perform. Have you found your mission? Have
you found the purpose of your life? For what cause did you come
into the world?
Undoubtedly each one has asked himself or herself: “For what
cause have I come into the world?” We are all aware of two
conflicting ideals in the world—
1. “Build yourself up no matter how much it costs the other
fellow.” or
2. “Help your fellow men, no matter how much it costs you.”
In the city of Chicago there was a great pulpit orator by the
name of Dr. Frank Gunsaulus. Dr. and Mrs. Gunsaulus did not
have children of their own so they showered their affection upon
a nephew. One Saturday morning this boy came running into the
Pastor’s study and asked: “Uncle, what are you doing?” The
preacher answered, “I am preparing my sermon.” “What is your
text?” asked the boy. “And for this cause came I into the world”
replied Dr. Gunsaulus. The boy became very serious and thought-
ful, and finally asked: “Uncle, why have I come into the world?”
“I can’t answer that question. You will have to answer that your-
self. May God help you to give the right answer in due course.”
Then the boy left more serious and thoughtful than ever.
Years later the Iroquois Theatre in Chicago burned down.
