keinen merklichen Eindruck hinterlásst, ist die »Binde-
zeit«. Der Querschnitt der Nadel soll 1 mm2 und ihr
Gewicht (inklusive Belastung) 300 gr. betragen.
Die Probe ist hei —)—15° bis -[-18° C. vorzu-
nelimen; das verwendete Wasser und der Zement
sollen dieselbe Temperatur haben.
III.
Portland-Zement soll raumbeslándig sein.
Die Probe ist in der Weise auszuíuhren, dass man
einen diinnen Kuchen aus Zemenlmörtel lierstellt und
diesen nach 24 stiindiger Aufbewahrung in feuchter
Luft unter Wasser Iegt, wonach sich durchaus keine
Verkriimmungen oder Kantenrisse an dem Kuehen
zeigen dúrfen. Die Prohe dauert 28 Tage; in der
Regel zeigen sich aber die Erseheinungen des Treibens
bereits nach 3 Tagen.
Zur Bestimmung der Raumbestándigkeit wird auch
die Prohe nach le Cliatelier zugelassen.
IV.
Portland-Zement soll so fein gemahlen sein, dass
er auf einem Siebe von 900 Maschen auf ein Quad-
ratcentimeter höchstens 3°/« Ruckstand hinterlásst.
Die Drahtslárke des Siebes soll gleicli der halben
Maschenweite sein.
V.
Festigkeilsproben am Portland-Zement sind in der
Weise vorzunehmen, dass man Wúrfel von 50 cm2
Seitenfláche aus einer Mischung von 1 Gewichtsteil
Zement, 3 Gewichtsteilen Sand und gewöhnlich 8—9
Gewichtsprozenten Wasser herstellt. Zu der Probe ist
deutscher oder englischer Normensand zu verwenden.
Die so liergestellten Wúrfel sollen die erslen 24
Stunden in feuchler Luft erstarren, worauf sie unter
Wasser zu Iegen sind, und sollen nach Verlauf von
28 Tagen eine Druckfestigkeit von mindestens 200 kg
pro cm2 bei normalbindendem (= langsambindendem)
Portland-Zement aufweisen.
Fiir jede Prúfung sind mindestens 5 Probekörper
anzufertigen und gilt die Durchschnittszahl als das
ermittelte Versuclisresultat.
Der Zementmörtel zu den Proberkörpern ist in die
Wúrfelformen zu bringen und im Hammerapparat
nacli Baurat Böhmc unler Anwendung von 150 Schlá-
gen einzuschlagen. Das Hammergewicht betrágl 2 kg.

Porlland Cement is a hydraulic cement mainly
composed of calcareous and argillaceous materials,
burnl at a clinkering temperature, whereupon the
resulting clinker is ground.
Addition of other materials after burning in order
to hasten or retard selting is allowed up to 3 per
cent by weight.
I.
The cement is to be sold in barrels, hatjbarrels or bags.
The barrels must be strong and tight. Unless olher-
wise provided, the weight is to be as follows:
Barrel 180 kilogrammes gross, 170 kilogr. net.
Halfbarrel 90 —»— — 83 — —
The bags inust be strong, tight and undamaged;
mended bags will not be regarded as warrantable
goods.
Unless a special weighl (f. i. 50 or 60 kilograinmes)
be provided, a bag of cement shall weigh 85 kilo-
grammes net.
There shall not be allowed more than 2 per cent
shrinkage of gross weigbt on any parcel.
Every parcel shall be distinclly marked with llie
gross weight, firrn or trade mark and »Portland
Cement«. Then the cement shall comply with the
conditions lrereinafter mentioned.
Ceinent containing dods or hard lumps shall not
be considered wrarrantable goods.
II.
If not otlierwise provided, the initial setting time
sliall not be within one liour from the time of mix-
ing, which may last three minutes. The íinal selting
time sliall be within (ifteen hours. Quick setting
cement will be accepted only if specially ordered.
The setting time of cement shall be determined by
means of the Vicat needle apparalus. To make the
mixture of proper thickness, the cement shall be
mixed with 23—30 per cent water by weiglit. Out
of the mixture a pat of llie thickness of 4 centimeter
shall be formed. The setting tiine is considered as
beginning, wrhen the needle of the apparatus referred
to does not pierce Ihe pat completely, stopping about
5 mm. from the underlying glass plate. Tlie cement
shall be considered as finally set, when tlie needle
fails lo make an impression wlien its point is applied
to the surface. The needle has a flat end of 1 square
mm and the wreight of 300 grammes.
Tliis test shall ahvays be done at a temperature
of 15°—18° C., the water and cemenl used being of the
same temperature.
III.
The cement must nol expand, when the mixture seis.
The testing is to be made by means of a thin pat
of the mixture. The pat shall be kept for 24 hours
in moist air, when it is put in water and no cracks
