actually reflects an open aquifer down
to a depth of 1 kilometer.
This is confirmed in the airborne
magnetic map in fig. 10. Its main
features are a NE-SW magnetic
„ridge”, traversed by a WNW-ESE-
trending magnetic low. The latter is ap-
parently caused by hydrothermal
demagnitization, and its location is con-
sistent with the groundwater flow
depicted in fig 8. Finally, the borehole
cross section in fig. 11 strongly indicates
flow of hot water from the Hengill in
the NW to the surface at Hveragerdi in
The geothermal areas presented
above seem to vary greatly with respect
to their heat sources. Svartsengi
apparantly has no local heat source and
derives its energy from the regional heat
flow. At Krafla, a magma chamber has
been located at a depth of 3 km. The
Hengill area, it seems, must get its heat
both from a local, magmatic source and
from the regional heat flow. Finally,
Namafjall and Hveragerði are fed by
other high-temperature areas,
respectively Krafla and Hengill. This
gives rise to a new classification, shown
in fig. 12, where geothermal areas are
classified according to their type of heat
source.
The three main geothermal areas,
Svartsengi, Krafla and Hengill, all
appear to be located where regional
tectonic features intersect. Partly, they
result from the increase in permeability
at these intersections and partly from
the magmatic intrusions common at
these weak spots in the earth’s crust.
This also implies that high-temperature
areas are keystones in the regional
tectonic framework in Iceland.
The tectonic pattern presented in the
case histories above does not appear to fit
the usual model for rifting in Iceland,
where the island is seen as a large
segment of the otherwise submerged
Mid-Atlantic ridge. A better agreement
might be found with a model depicting
Iceland as a dome, characterized by
triple junction fracturing on a smaller
scale than is usually assumed.
