There has been a tradition for Icelandic artists to get education and in-
spiration in Denmark. Svavar Guðnason and Sigurjón Ólafsson went to
Copenhagen in the 1930s and made an impact on the art life in the capi-
tal, especially among the avant-garde. Both artists had to stay in Den-
mark during the Second World War, and Svavar’s work from that period
is considered by many his most valuable. In 1948 their Danish friends
came to Iceland and stayed for half a year, overwhelmed by the culture
and nature. The result of their visit can also be seen in this exhibition.

At the opening this rainy Saturday it was hard to get a feeling of Ingib-
jörg’s installation, mainly because it was attended by a lot of people. Many
near-accidents happened, people almost stepping on the perfume bot-
tles on the floor. The exhibition takes its name from these bottles, which
were used by the African priestess with whom the artist is working.

Roni Horn, somewhere between diva and demi-God in the New York pho-
tography scene, adopted Iceland some years ago with her stunning study You
Are the Weather. Since that book, she has contributed regularly to the local
community, even keeping a studio in operation in Reykjavík. Her work bal-
ances a masculine grace with an astounding feel for mutability. Any exhibi-
tion of hers is an event.
