If you just arrived you have
probably noticed a few dif-
ferences between Iceland and
most other assignments. The
first noticeable change is the
landscape; it is not like any-
thing you have ever seen but
one of the most beautiful plac-
es you will ever get to experi-
ence. Another change you
might notice is how close-knit
the community is. Everyone
seems to know each other.
One of the biggest changes
you might notice is that some
of the processes are a little dif-
ferent than other places you
have been. The process that
seems most challenging is ap-
plying for childcare.
To get childcare the first
ing list through the Child
Development Home (CDH)
program. Navy Regulations
specify how the program is
run and who has priority for
care. All children are put on
one list and offered the first
available care. If the parent
wants a different type of care
(a child development home
instead of the Child Develop-
ment Center (CDC) or vice
versa), the child is placed on a
second, “preferred” care list.

Calling All Triathletes
THE ICEMAN COMMETH
The ICEMAN Triathlon is coming
soon! 6 August 2005 MWR will be
sponsoring the first triathlon this base
has seen in many years. The triath-
lon will consist of a 500 meter swim,
17K bike, and 5K run. The race will
be held entirely on base. With two cat-
egories; individual and team, you can
compete solo or share the glory with
your friends! Priced at only $5.00 per
person, which includes a t-shirt and a
chance to win other prizes, this is the
summers “must do” event. All partici-
pants are required to pre-register by 1
August in the Aquatics office.
Never participated in a triathlon be-
fore? Then this is a great time to start
since the ICEMAN has a first timer di-
vision. Event planner Meghan Dron-
berger and technical director LT Jesus
Crespo-Diaz have been instrumental in
planning all aspects of The ICEMAN
to insure its success. Of course the key
measure of success is participation,
and that will be up to you! Even if the
thought of a Triathlon is daunting, you
still get in on the fun and volunteer.
For more information on registering
or volunteering, stop by the Aquatics’
Center or contact Meghan at 7851 or
6772.
