January 27, 1971 THE WHITE FALCON Page 3 ‘Hair’ problem has Adm. Zumwalt singing a different tune m The trend Is....HAIR. And the ^^foresight to move with trends of the nation has prompted the Navy to clarify certain "fuzzy" stand- ards. To be specific, CNO(Z-70) has , further clarified what Navy-wide commands have been tearing their hair over by defining limitations to both length and style. And ' the results determination of hair style is an individual decision. Within this criteria, hair shall be neatly trimmed, length not to exceed the collar at the back of the neck, except when ta- pered and closely trimmed. Hair in front shall not fall below the brow when uncovered or bush out below properly worn , headgear. The exact maximum length of hair is no longer specified, yet shall not interfere with military head- gear. Sideburns will not extend be- low the bottom of the earlobe, will be of even width with no flare and end in a clean shaven horizontal line. Beards shall be well-groomed, full and partial beards, including Vandykes and goatees, are authorized. With dungarees, the wearing of blue working jackets, raincoats, or peacoats is also authorized, but only on a to-and-from work basis. Flight jackets may be worn with flight suits, if they are appropriate in appearance. Rate exams start February 2 Navy-wide advancement in rate examinations are but a week away, and the times, dates and places are set. The place will be the Polar Club and the time 8:30 a.m. The dates make the difference. The P03 exam is on February 2, P02 on February 4, POl on February 9, CPO on February 11, and SCPO and MCPO on February 16. Personnel taking the exams must know their social security number and must wear either blues or dungarees to the exam. No ci- vilian clothes will be permitted. Beneficial suggestions reap profits; naval station in step for 1971 ^^Une #je Two defense force members be- came $270 richer for beneficial suggestions submitted during 1970. The total reflects the defense force's share in the $143,748 awarded to military and civilian personnel last year, according to the IRO. In January 1970, ASM2 John C. A. Schroeder was awarded $100 for his recommendation to eliminate leaking .water from interfering with the equipment, personnel and shop spaces he worked in. Then in March, SK3 Richard R. Hauser suggested methods leading to the automation of the job or- der record keeping system. He was awarded $170 for his ideas. Civilians working with the de- fense force, both Icelandic and rican, also received cash a- ards last year. The highest award went to three Icelanders of the fire department who modified an old Air Force ambulance. A crash-rescue vehicle emerged from what would have been a scrapped vehicle, and $800 was the reward for their efforts. The cash awards program was conceived to give military person- nel an incentive to contribute worthwhile ideas that help save time and money, or do a better job. Suggestions that do not warrent a cash award, but are nevertheless meritorious, result in a letter of appreciation entry in the individual's service re- cord. Four suggestions have been re- lived since the beginning of ^his year. Suggestions are sub- mitted to the department in charge of the area for which changes are recommended. An inter-departmen- tal committee headed by Cdr. J. W. Alexander then decides whether the suggestion merits a cash a- ward. Accepted recommendations are then submitted to higher author- ity for evaluation and applica- tion to service-wide use. At this point, suggestions become eligible for further cash awards depending on general adaptability. The Industrial Relations Office has the details and forms. SPRINGTIME IN THE DESERT — Spring in the desert, or any- where else for that matter, has never bloomed a pret- tier picture than Rolande Bieber, 36—24— 36, left, and Shiela N or - wood, 37-24- 36, Who enjoy the tomboyish antics of tree climbing a t the Desert Inn in sunny Las Vegas.
