exemption to $625
There are various types of ex-
emptions that a taxpayer may be
entitled to in filing his 1970
tax return. The importance of an
exemption to the taxpayer is that
it reduces his taxable income,
which determines the amount of
tax owed by the taxpayer.
The Tax Reform Act of 1969
made some important changes in
this area. Under the old law,
$600 was allowed for each exemp-
tion claimed. The new law in-
creases exemption amounts in four
stages: For 1970, it is $625;
for 1971, it will be $650; for
will be $700, and for
thereafter, each exemp-
be worth $750.
Taxpayers should claim all
emptions to which they are
gaily entitled, since each
caption results in a significant
reduction in taxable income and,
thus, in the amount of taxes re-
quired to be paid.
Taxpayers are also reminded
that federal income tax returns,
like wills, contracts and other
legal docunents, have to be sign-
ed to be complete. The Internal
Revenue Service reports
that thousands of tax-
payers forgot to sign
their returns last year.
On joint returns,
both husband and wife
must sign the return.
Each shares legal re-
sponsibility for the re-
turn.
The requirement to
sign a return exists
even if the taxpayer has
someone else perpare the
return. The taxpayer is
held responsible for
accuracy of the return.
Unsigned returns are re-
turned, without action.
