Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. Sawyer assumed com-
mand of the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron dur-
ing a change of command ceremony last Friday.
Former "Black Knights" commander, Lt. Col. Ray-
mond J. Wyskup has assumed the duties of Air Forces
Iceland assistant director of operations.
The ceremony took place in Hangar 831 with 160
squadron NCOS and airmen formed into flights to
honor the new and past commanders. In addition,
there was a large gallery of defense force members
and their wives in attendance.
Four squadron F-102s flew over in formation at
the conclusion of the ceremony.
Praises of the records established by members of
the 57th and of Col. Wyskup were voiced by Rear
Adm. John K. Beling, ComIDF, and Col. Budd H. Butch-
er, AFI commander, during the short ceremony.
Admiral Beling stated, in part, "Though I don't
have the records to prove it...I am confident that
no other commander of the 'Black Knights' has had
e impact upon the squadron as has Col. Wyskup in
nine months he has held command.
"His tour," the admiral continued, "has been one
marked achievement and outstanding leadership.
The accomplishments of the squadron have been earned
through the dedicated efforts of all hands, up and

down, through leadership by example. During Col.
Wyskup's tour, the 57th has logged over 3,000 air
hours—accident-free flying hours—in weather and
under conditions that at times boggle the mind.
This is graphic evidence of the leadership he put
forth to elicit such outstanding effort from the
unsung mechs, flight line and support personnel be-
hind every man in the cockpit."
In his remarks, Col. Butcher added, "Let's re-
flect for a minute and take a look at the record
book over the past few years. The 'Black Knights'
of Keflavik have received five
Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards,
the Air Force Association's Cita-
tion of Honor and last year, the
57th was recognized officially as
the most outstanding fighter in-
terceptor squadron in the Air
Force when it received the highly
coveted Hughes Trophy award."
Citing 1970 statistics, the
colonel noted that the squadron
flew over 5,100 hours and made 353
intercepts on Soviet aircraft dur-
ing the period. Of particular
importance, Col. Butcher noted,
was the maintenance of "an op-
erational ly-ready rate 15 percent
higher than the ADC standard. No
other unit in the command can
boast of such a record."
