'Hair’ opens to capacity crowd
Monday evening at the Glaum-
baer Club in Reykjavik, the Ice-
landic premiere of "Hair" was
performed. The show opened at 8
a capacity crowd,
B At 5 p.m, that night, the
Btage was still in complete dis-
array, a last minute rehearsal of
the finale remained to be rehear-
sed for the last time and the
lights had not heen set up yet.
By 7 all the confusion had dis-
appeared and things began to fall
into place for the opening.
With the throngs of people not
yet seated, the actors also be-
gan filtering on stage from all
directions, handing out incense
or flowers to the audience. For
over the next two hours, the au-
dience saw an excellent combina-
tion of acting, singing, light
shows and music.
Very little of the play is
dialogue and even those parts can
he understood hy the actions, so
not knowing Icelandic should not
be a deterrent. For the final
number, "Let the Sun Shine," cast
memhers selected members of the
audience to join the dance om
stage. Most refused at first,
then resolved themselves with se-
curity in numbers and there was
soon more audience than cast on
stage,
While viewing the rehearsals
ten days ago, there was some
skepticism as to the solvability
of numerous problems such as the
adaptation to the Icelandic au-
dience. After the premiere,
those doubts were gone.
Should anyone see this musical
solely for the nudity, they will
be disappointed, for contrary to
some popular opinion, there is
only one such scene, of very
brief duration and under subdued
lighting. If however, the pros-
pective viewer wants to see a re-
levant musical about the world in
which we live, then "Hair" pro-
vides that satisfying view.
