Tuition assistance program aids base servicemen The Navy provides financial assistance through the Tuition Assistance Program for college or high school students. Under the program, the Navy pays 75% of the cost of courses taken, while the student pays the other 25%. The Navy's share is paid directly to the school con- cerned and not to the individual. Locally, the Keflavik division of the University of Maryland provides college courses under the tuition assistance plan. The school here offers five semesters of courses annually. Term V is being announced in this issue of the "White Falcon" (Page 5). The Tuition Assistance Program in no way detracts from educa- tional benefits under the G.I. Bill available after military service. Seniors on the Gullfoss with the ship's skipper are: Dave Burnham, Mike Dunn, Lu Campo, Edward Pensel, Debbie Hickey, Betty Devaney, Kevin Sullivan, Bob Adessa and Gerald Duncan. Louis Kelly, the tenth senior on the trip was not available for the photo. Mahan seniors take trip to Isafjordhur ski slope Ten seniors from the 1971 class of A. T. Mahan High School accom- panied the group of defense force members and dependents on last month's ski trip to Isafjordhur. The small ski-resort town, located on the northwest corner of Ice- land, is a ten hour boat ride ----------------------------------------- from Reykjavik. Departing the base for Reykja- vik at 6 p.m. March 19, the group boarded the Gullfoss for the sea- ward trip north. For some of the seniors it was their first time at sea. True of North Atlantic waters, the Gullfoss pitched and rolled and upset the intestinal fortitude of several of the sen- iors . Isafjordhur, at the foot of towering mountains, was covered with three to five feet of snow. The constant call of the slopes beckoned, and the group hesitated not in boarding a bus to the ski lift. Once on the slope, even the novices managed to stay erect most of the time. When night came, the group a- bandoned the ski slopes for an evening of dancing that lasted until 2 a.m. Everyone enjoyed the dance, but couldn't warm up to the cold walk back to the ship. During the dance, the seniors met members of a local Icelandic basketball club. Result? A challenge, a game, and a 54-52 final score — in favor of the host team. Monday was a day of sightsee- ing, shopping, and touring the shrimp factory. The factory in Isafjordhur provides shrimp for Iceland, as well as export pro- ducts. That afternoon the group returned to the ski slopes. Tuesday, the last day of the stay in Isafjordhur, was another beautiful day. Although the ski lift wasn't working for two hours the group spent most of the day skiing. The ship departed Isafjordhur at 7 p.m. and steamed all night for Reykjavik. The seniors ran bake sales, car washes, and a spaghetti din- ner to raise money for the trip. Through these projects, they were also able to pay for the boat fare for each senior, and con- tribute one - half of the chaper- ones ' fares. Girl Scout cookie drive The annual Girl Scout cook drive got underway Saturday, A] ril 3, and runs to April 15. 12 FALCON
