returns to Iceland
* for final time

The Honorable Magnus Vignir
Magnusson, Iceland's late Ambas-
sador to the United States, made
his final trip home last week.
He died April 4 from a heart
attack while visiting Arlington
National Cemetary and the grave
of President John F. Kennedy.
The Ambassador's body arrived
at the Keflavik . International
Airport aboard a special U.S. Air
Force transport plane April 8.
The plane was met by a group of
military and civilian dignitaries
and a Marine honor guard.
Ambassador Magnusson was bom
in Reykjavik in October 1910. He
I graduated from Reykjavik Junior
tollege in 1931, and from the Law
School of the University of Ice-
land in 1936. He studied inter-
national law in Paris in 1936 and
1937. The next year he became a
Deputy in the Foreign Service.
He was appointed Embassy Sec-
retary in the Icelandic Embassy
in London in 1941, and First Sec-
retary in the Icelandic Embassy
in Washington, D.C. in 1944. In
1951, he became Office Director
in the Ministry of Foreign Af-
fairs, and in 1956, he was re-
leased from duties as Ministry
Director to become Iceland's Am-
bassador to Sweden and other coun-
tries.
In October 1969, he was ap-
pointed Ambassador of Iceland to
the United States and other coun-
tries.
Quinn for Guinn in
AFI Headquarters
Squadron position
First Lt. Thomas E. Quinn has
assumed command of the Headquar-
ters Squadron Section, Air Forces
Iceland.
He replaced Capt. Jerry R.
Guinn,the AFI director of Person-
nel , who was squadron commander
as an additional duty. Lt. Quinn
also took over the duties of AFI
chief of Administration from
SMSgt. Jerry Hickey, who will re-
tire in June.
Last assigned to the 963rd
Airborne Early Warning and Con-
trol Squadron, McClellan AFB,
Calif.,Lt. Quinn was commissioned
second lieutenant through the Re-
serve Officer Training Corps at
Loyolla University, Los Angeles.
He graduated in 1968 with a de-
gree in political science.

Lt. CoL Thomas W. Sawyer...
57th FIS Commander cited
Lt. CoT. Thomas W. Sawyer, Commander 57th Fighter Interceptor
Squadron, has received the Meritorious Service Medal for distinguish-
ing himself while assigned to his previous command.
Prior to taking over the 57th FIS, he was the college cadence pro-
ject officer and chief of the test branch, Weapons Division at the
Headquarters Aerospace Defense Command, Ent AFB, Colo., from January
1968 to March 1971.
The citation accompanying the award read, in part, "Col. Sawyer's
professionalism, outstanding leadership and keen judgement contributed
greatly to the highly sucessful demonstration of the United States
Capability to deploy aerospace defense forces on a global basis, and
|me improvement of ADC airborne missile systems."
The medal was presented last week by Col. Budd H. Butcher, Com-
mander Air Forces Iceland.
