"...honor them as they
would wish to be...”
"On this day of commemora-
tion, we pause to honor those
“brave members of our armed -
forces who have given the fi-
nal measure of devotion to our
country.
"Let us honor them as they
would wish to be honored —
by maintaining our freedom, by
striving for peace among na-
tions, by giving their descen-
dant# the opportunity for a
better life. These are the
things for which they died."

"...stop to recognize
their courage and duty,”
"On this Memorial Day,1971,
we pause to remember the dead
of all wars for their service
and sacrifice that all of us
might continue to live in free-
dom. As we stop to recognize
their courage and duty, let us
not forget that we — the liv-
ing — also have a duty; a du-
ty to bring together all our
great and good people. From
men such as we honor on Memor-
ial Day canwe find the example
of strength and devotion to
serve that will help us meet
our duties and growing obliga-
tions. To succeed in this
task will be to insure that
our nation's honored dead shall
not have served and ■
vain."
