Grand Tour
Anyone interested in taking
the nine-day Recreation Depart-
ment Grand Tour of Iceland should
begin planning now. The tour will
depart on June 23 and return to
Keflavik on July 1.
The first day of the tour will
include a drive to Krisuvik with
a visit to the boiling mud pools
and steam jets. The bus will then
proceed to Hveragerdi where the
natural steam has been harnessed
for the greenhouse industry. From
there the tour goes to Skalholt,
the ancient Bishopric of southern
Iceland. The first day's touring
will end up at Laugarvatn where
the hot pools will give the tra-
veler a chance to relax by swim-
ming. Pony-riding or hiking are
also available.
The second day begins with a
trip to the Thorsardale valley at
the foothills of Mount Hekla where
an old farmhouse has been excava-
ted from the lava which enveloped
it in 1104. The bus then returns
for another night at Laugarvatn
and stops to visit Gullfoss and
Geysir.
The third day includes a visit
to the old parliament site of
Thingvellir then proceeds through
the scenic highlands to Reyholt,
home of the medieval historian,
Snorri Sturluson.
The fourth day is filled with
a long drive ending in Akureyri,
passing numerous interesting and
scenic areas and stopping at an
old church, a museum and a well
preserved ancient farm.
Ihe fifth day is devoted prin-
cipally to touring the northern
city of Akureyri. In the after-
noon, the bus leaves the city and
goes to Godafoss, or "Falls of
the Gods" where according to log-
end, the chieftain Thorgeir threw
in the pagan idols after Iceland's
conversion to Christianity. The
sixth day will be spent touring
Myvatn.
On the seventh day, the tour
goes to Dettifoss, one of the lar-
gest falls in Europe. The bus
then continues on to the eastern
highlands for a visit to the
trade center of eastern Iceland,
Egilsstadir and finally ends up
at the summer resort of Eidar.
The eighth day takes in an ex-
cursion to the fishing village of
Seydisfjord and also encompasses
a visit to the experimental for-
est at Hallormsstadur.
The last day of the Grand Tour
is reserved for the flight back
to Reykjavik where, weather per-
mitting, the visitor can get an
eagle's eye panorama.
The cost of $180 per person in-
cludes accommodations at comfort-
able hotels, most with swimming
pools. Transportation will be by
bus and prop-jet aircraft.
