This week in sports
AFI remains
by Dick Plante
first in NBL
A lot of action took place
this past week In the sports
world. Some teams chose the road
upward and some unwillingly had
to go down.
Base softball
Slow-pitch
In American League softball
CFK No. 2 defeated CFK No. 1 4-3
in a real heads up game for first
place. Both teams were undefeat-
ed as Tim Orban emerged from the
dugouts and cracked a two-run
single in the bottom of the sixth.
Grindavik will have a chance
with two losses, but they lost a
tough game to the CPO'a, the most
improving team at the moment.
Competition is real tough as the
other teams continue to defeat
each other. Leading the league
in hitting is Poo Stautzenam of
the VP-24 Narcs with Pinky Pink-
erton of Admin close behind.
Comptroller is the lone unde-
feated team in the National
League, however the VP-24 Officers
have been playing the toughest
teams in the league. VP-24 Trons
have good spirit, while Killer
Kyle of AFI leads the league in
hitting, with a .529 batting
average. Close behind also for
AFI is Les Hughes followed by
Oliver Wendell of Comptroller. It
looks like anything goes for the
top spots on the standings, with
only three games separating the
top five places.
Fast-pitch
With the ball coming a little
harder across the plate, AFI just
about clinched the league with a
5-1 win over Food Services, while
Rockville dropped a game to MAA in
fast pitch action. The pitching
of Jose Rodrigues and Rube Morey
has been too much for the rest of
the league. Terry Emberry is
leading the league in hitting,
with a .500 average, while close
behind from Rockville is Bill
Aspy hitting a .455.

Basketball action
In basketball action, Weather,
Personnel, and Air Ops, closely
followed by CFK, seems to be the
pattern in the "B" league basket-
ball. CFK has two losses while
the other leaders have only lost
one each. Charley Reed holds the
hot hand for Weather averaging 15
points a game. Pat Lucas and
Lefty Witcher of - Air Ops, and
Kaiser Wilhelm along with Russel
Martin are all having fine games.
Personnel has the defense and
picking the winners at this stage
is like predicting the weather.
Supply has opened a two game
lead with the excellent shooting
of Brad Floto for NCS with a 18.3
game average as he leads the "A"
league. Bones McKinney from AFI
is the big gun for his team,
while Donny Atkinson gets his
share of the baskets for 57th.
