KEFLAVIK SCENE
With all this nice summer weather, construction crews around
the base have been working strong to get new sod in various areas
around the station. In places where the grass has been put in
and has had time to root, the lawns look beautiful. But there
have been a few cases where some inconsiderate individuals have
taken some of this new sod for their own personal use. We hope
everyone appreciates how nice the base is beginning to look with
the new green grass, and the practice of "lifting the turf" will
come to a halt.
September 11 has been set as the starting date for the next
square dance class, sponsored by the Midnight Sun-downers club.
The classes will convene then and each Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
for the following 15 weeks. The first three nights are open for
registration, but because of the nature and amount of material to
be presented, the class must close for registration on the third
night. Classes are held at the Rod and Gun Club. For further
information, call Ron Markus, club president, at Ext. 8252.
Once again, we'd like to remind the ladies that ' the August

We'd like to say best of luck to Jim "Tiny" Davis, who has
"joined" the Marines. Actually, Jim has been told that in order
to reenlist in the Navy, he has to lose 100 pounds by December.
Figuring the best-way to lose the excess weight was to Join the
Marine Barracks' physical training program, he volunteered to
take part in. the weight-reducing exercises. "Tiny" weighed-in at
317 pounds when he started physical training with the Marines.
Back to the great outdoors...streets on the naval station are
getting a lot smoother these days. All paved roads on the base
are being resurfaced. For the minor detouring inconvenience, we
will have much easier driving when the project is completed.
There are a couple of birthdays of note this week. The Air
Force is celebrating its 24th year as a separate Department of
Defense activity. The anniversary was Monday, and local airmen
celebrated by going about their normal routines. Also this week
marked the 29th anniversary of the WAVES, the female counterpart
of the Navy. Their initials "W.A.V.E.S." stand for "Women Ac-
cepted for Voluntary Emergency Service", and has become a mis-no-
mer, since oyer the years the WAVES have become an integral and
permanent part of'the Navy, :Happy anniversary to the Air Force
and to the Navy WAVES.
Just a reminder for dependents. Passports issued prior to

Wondering what to do with some of your spare time? Try the
University of Maryland's college program here at Keflavik. For
a couple of nights a week, you can attend classes and in just a
few weeks, get started on your college career. The cost is eco-
nomical, and the opportunity is great. For further information
call the University office at Ext. 6226.
