SecNav reminds Navy
of transient family lodging
The Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable John Chafee, has expressed
his desires that all people on PCS orders be made aware of the avail-
ability of motel-type lodges at many stateside Navy bases.
"The lack of adequate low-priced temporary lodging accommodations
for Navy personnel and their de-
pendents on PCS orders continues
to be a matter of concern for me,"
the Secretary said in a recent
message to the Navy.
A number of these lodges were
constructed in 1970, and more cure
planned in order to "enhance the
attractiveness of the Navy as a
career."
The first 900 units of this
type are located at Norfolk, Lit-
til Creek, Newport, New London,
Bethesda, Charleston, Memphis,
Pensacola, Miramar, Lemoore,
North Island, San Diego and Ala-
meda. Utilization of these fa-
cilities in several areas have
indicated that Navy people are
not aware of their existence, an
awareness which could greatly re-
duce out-of-pocket expenses while
making PCS moves.
All units rent for $8 a day
regardless of family size. Res-
ervations may be made well in ad-
vance, and are accepted on an
80-20 percent enlisted-officer
ratio.
