KEFLAVIK SCENE
Conservation is a key word here at the naval station. Now
that longer nights are upon us — and getting longer all the
time — our use of lights is increasing and placing a heavier
burden on the naval station to provide adequate lighting for our
comfort and safety. We should keep in mind that it is our duty
to assist the base in conserving electrical power. Overuse causes
unnecessary expenses — money that could be better spent else-
where. Sure it costs only a few cents to bum a light bulb. But
multiply that by the number of light bulbs on the station and we
realize quite a few dollars, some of which could be saved.
Along the same line we could talk about vandalism. This has
been a terrific problem here at the naval station, and it is not
isolated among a few unconcerned dependent children. Dependent
children do not throw rocks and cans at barracks windows or the
plate-glass entrance to the CPO Club. They do not destroy the
interior of barracks. We all keep asking the naval station and
the recreation department to spend money for better facilities
for our leisure, but so much money has to be spent for repairs of
existing facilities there is little or none left for new facili-
ties. Again, let all of us who are adults act like mature adults
and set a good example for our children to follow by taking care
of what we have so we can have more. Frankly, I believe all of
us would like to see a lot less adult "children" and many more
adult "adults."
Grades seven through 12 will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. Tues-
day. The high school faculty will be attending an in-service
meeting that afternoon. Lunch will not be served to these stu-
dents, and buses will be available for the homeward trips at
11:50.
The Keflavik Ski Club will hold a meeting in the elementary
school utility room Sunday afternoon at 1:30. A local ski in-
structor will be the guest speaker. All members and prospective
members are invited to attend.

30 years old
One of our most popular fringe
benefits is now 30 years old.
That’s the USO — the United
Service Organization — which has
provided a "home away from home"
since 1941.
Ever since early in World War
II, the USO has managed free
clubs, lounges,special activities
and stage shows for members of
the U. S. forces at home and over-
seas. More than 11 million peo-
ple used the facilities of state-
side clubs in 1970. In the same
year more than 13 million passed
through the doors of the 62 over-
seas clubs. And more than 33
million attended USO-sponsored
stage shows last year.
Almost a million military trav-
elers and families used USO loun-
ges at the airport terminals in
San Francisco, Columbus, Clev^M^.
land, Chicago, Dallas and Seatt]^^^^
In recent years USO cent^^^V
have expanded their services
include housing referrals, baby
sitting, special programs for
waiting wives, head-start educa-
tional programs and other social
needs.
And of course, no mention of
the USO would be complete with-
out including Bob Hope who has
taken USO troupes overseas for 28
of the USO’s 30 years.
Here at Keflavik we frequently
see USO-sponsored shows that come
here as part of a North Atlantic
entertainment tour.
