Naval Communication Station's
Big Orange team raced through
four opponents to win the pre-
season base basketball tournament
held Nov. 1-7. Big Orange topped
Supply, 54-45, in the finals Sun-
day to secure the title.
Center Jerry Egbring, a terror
on the offensive boards all week,
topped the CommSta cagers with 17
points in the final game. He got
scoring help from team captain
Vern Chewning with 16 markers.
Chewning also led the floor play
and rebounding for the winners.
Brad Floto's 12 points and Jim
Brady's 10 led Supply in their
runner-up effort.
Big Orange never was seriously
threatened throughout the tourna-
ment as the final game 9-point
spread was their closest encount-
er. They overwhelmed VP-49, 61-
22, defeated ComFairKef, 62-51,
and topped AMD, 62-33, in the
semifinals enroute to the champi-
onship. Egbring and Chewning
were the scoring and rebounding
leaders throughout the tourney,
as Egbring's 26 points against
AMD was the team high. However,
they got lots of rebounding help
from Paul Frost and excellent
floor play from Jerry McPhearson
and John Tharp, who also had a 22
point night against ComFairKef.
Bill Belmear came off the bench
to provide relief help.
Supply reached the finals by
winning a hard fought semifinal
match from Air Operations, 45-40.
High schooler David Devaney led
10
Supply's Drew Eason (12) and Big
Orange's Jerry Egbring rebound.
Supply with 16 points while Joe
Henthorn's 15 were tops in the
losing cause.
High individual mark of the
week was achieved by Jack Beck of
ComFAirKef who tallied 30 points
in one game and 22 in another.
Larry Wilkerson of NSGA also had
a 26-point night as did Ron Pra-
ther of Rockville.
Regular season cage play began
Monday with A, B and C leagues, a
ladies league and two noon recre-
ation leagues.

ment in Portsmouth, N. H., this
week.

Losing Monday, 13-7, to Bruns-
wick, the Keflavik gridders came
back to trounce Davisville, R.I.,
26-0, and keep their hopes alive
in the double elimination tourna-
ment.
The all stars were to play the
loser of the Brunswick - Newport
game Wednesday as the White Fal-
con was going to press. A loss
would send them winging back home
while a win was necessary to ex-
tend their stay in Portsmouth.
