Defense Department and local
policy on equal opportunity and
human relations have been re-
issued and clarified in a state-
ment to all Iceland Defense Force
personnel by Rear Adm. John K.
Beling, ComIDF.
The message states that the
execution of the policy of equal
opportunity and treatment for all
requires daily execution and com-
plete understanding by each in-
dividual .
Problems arise in this area
because of lack of understanding
or everyone not being fully in-
formed. In addition, all too
frequently, problems in human re-
lations are caused by thoughtless
talk and actions.
Four specific points are made
in the statement:
First, there is absolutely no
distinction to be made between
individuals regardless of their
uniform, race, color, creed or
national origin. The only indi-
vidual factors that matter are
merit, ability, performance, ex-
perience and potential.
Second, there will be no spe-
cial or unusual provisions made
for the accommodation of any spe-
cial interest group.
Third, each one is to adhere
rigidly and impartially to his
individual service regulations
and those promulgated by ComIDF
concerning equal opportunity and
treatment.
Fourth, attitudes and day-to-
day conduct will reflect personal
participation in equal opportuni-
ty programs. There is no place
in the military for insensitivi-
ty. Rather, there is great rea-
son for sensitivity.
Adm. Beling charged every mem-
ber of the Defense Force with the
responsibility for a personal
commitment in achieving the goal
of equality for all. He said,
"Equal opportunity must become a
fact and a normal part of our
everyday lives."
