a better job for Uncle Sam if you
are happy.
This is not so easy, you say.
Some women act as if they have
rank or rate and make life un-
pleasant for others. Why does
the military establishment appr-
ove of this?
They do not. Let us quote
Florence Ridgely Johnson, wife of
a Vice Admiral, in her book for
wives "Welcome Aboard":

in the Navy. You hold no commis-
sion and wear no stripes....you
do not have, even unofficially,
any privilege or rank whatsoever.
You should be careful never to
attempt to give anything that
might even be mistaken for an or-
der to anybody...You should never
demand extra consideration in the
Dispensary, Commissary, Navy Ex-
change or anywhere else because
of your husband's rank. If you
do, you will not only be thor-
oughly disliked but you will be
the laughing stock of the sta-
tion."
Unfortunately, we ladies do
not always meet the standards of
conduct we should. Should you

Conclusion: Wives clubs
should exist for the joy and
pleasure of those who want them.
Those women who serve as officers
and committee chairmen deserve
our thanks for their time, ef-
fort and patience. No wife
should feel compelled to go. Any
suggestion of pressure or force
should be uprooted and cast out
like a cancerous growth befo
it spreads its malignancy and d
stroys the strong, healthy flo
ers our clubs can be.
