large body of water was separating them
from their destination.
While the rescue team was aware of
three other Norwegian ships in the area,
Navy Lieutenant Bob Martin, Iceland De-
fense Force Search and Rescue Coordin-
ator, said the HC-130 crew reported they
could not see how another ship could pet
the men off the ice floe - that a heli-
copter appeared to be the only way off.
At Rescue Coordination Center head-
quarters Wednesday, the decision was
made to attempt a long-range helicopter
pickup. It was a long and difficult
flight for the HH-3 helicopter, and re-
quired in-flight refueling from the ac-
companying HC-130 Hercules.
The Patrol Squadron 5 Orion, with
Lieutenant John Foster as Patrol Plane
Commander, and Lieutenant Commander John
Coleman aboard as mission commander,
launched at 10 a.m. to provide updated
weather reports and navigation assist-
ance to the rescue force.
At noon, the Jolly Green Giant heli-
copter lifted off with Captain Richard
S. Foley, USAF, at the controls. It was
a five hour flight for the helicopter.
At 2:30, the HC-130, under the comm-
and of Captain Richard Keeler, USAF, was
airborne to coordinate the mission and
provide in-flight refueling for the
helicopter. It was refueled only once
during the mission.
The flight crews reported back that
weather conditions in the rescue area
were good.
When the HH-3 arrived on the scene
at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon,
the last of the Fortuna survivors were
boarding the rescue ship.
The rescue was coordinated by the IDF
Rescue Coordination Center, with a great
deal of assistance from the Icelandic
Life Saving Association and the Coast
Guard Association, and coastal communi-
cations stations in northern Iceland
which relayed communications between the
rescue center and the on scene units.
Fortuna was one of three Norwegian
whaling vessels known to be trapped in
the pack ice. According to a spokesman
at IDF, the ships ppobably are seal
hunters which intentionally entered the
area to hunt before the ice closed in
last fall.
AIMD volleyball champions
by Bob Simister
AIMD finished its season with two
easy wins to remain undefeated during
regular season play.
High School "A" was a close second
while the 57th FIS nailed down the
third place slot.
Post season play began Wednesday to
determine the base volleyball champion-
ship. AIMD remains the odds on favorite
to win, but High School and 57th cannot
be counted out. Det. 14, 756 or Supply
could be spoilers if the top three teams
are not careful.
The post season tournament will be a
double elimination tourney with play
continuing tonight and tomorrow after-
noon. The finals will be held Sunday.
Women’s League finished their season
yesterday. While final results are not
yet available, it appears that High
School I will be this year’s champs
of their league.

League each dropped one in the loss

NATO Team
loses match
The NATO Base Volleyball Team hosted
the Jordanhill College of Glasgow on
Friday in an exciting best of five match
that lasted almost two hours.
The NATO Team dropped the match two
games to three. Except for the fourth
game, the teams were about equally
matched and it was hard to pick the win-
ner.
The NATO Team had to come from behind
in the first two games to pull them out.
They began the third well but ran out of
steam toward the end. They fell asleep
in the fourth game, but got revitalized
for the final game, but it wasn't quite
enough for a victorious finale.
The scores were: (NATO first) 17-15,
16-14, 10-15, 5-15 and 13-15,
