Sportsmanship: ZZ°.ZT“
Seven-year-old Ronnie Blaylock won
the overall Sportsmanship Award, and
James Lake, 10, was awarded the Out-
standing Champion trophy Sunday, in the
Viking Judo Club's first tournament com-
petition.
Judoists consider the Sportsmanship
Award to be the most coveted trophy in
the game. It is won through a display
of Judo courtesy and technique. The out-
standing Champion Trophy is awarded for
sustained exceptional technique.
IN A NAGE NO KATA, technique demonstra-
tion, Anna Hjaltadottir throws her hus-
band, Ossur Torfason, over her shoulder.
The two Black Belt Judoists performed in
slow motion to demonstrate movements and
techniques of the art to spectators.
They teach classes in Keflavik and Reyk-
javik, and soon will begin instructing
the Viking Judo Club.
During a brief tournament intermiss-
ion, Icelandic Black Belt Judoists Ossur
Torfason and Anna Hjaltadottir, a hus-
band-wife team, awed spectators with a
demonstration of classic Kodokan techni-
ques.
Ossur and Anna, recently instructed
by an Eighth Degree Black Belt from Jap-
an. will becin teaching the Viking Judo
Club May 22. The Morses, George, Amoy,
and Brad, who founded the club in Janu-
ary 1975, and who have taught the base
judoists since, leave Iceland in June
for the United States.
Mrs. Morse, a First Degree Black
Belt, said she was very happy with the
results of Sunday's tournament.
"The kids have made tremendous prog-
ress in technique and attitude. It has
been a very rewarding experience," she
said.
The Monday afternoon youth class has
40 children enrolled, 36 of whom partic-
ipated in the tournament. An evening
class for advanced juniors and adults
has 14 students and is taught primarily
by George Morse, a Fifth Degree Black
Belt.
Other winners in Sunday's competition
were:
First Weight Division: (1) Bennie Be-
nacci; (2) Bill Kennington: (3) Jeff
Scruggs.
Second Weight Division: (1) Robert
Turner; (2) Charlie Slack; (3) Shane
Oglesby.
Third Weight Division: (1) James
Lake; (2) Andrew Curl; (3) Rodney
Hamrick.
Fourth Weight Division: (1) David
Snyder; (2) Dina Slack; (3) Jean Du-
bois .
Fifth Weight Division: (1) Luciano
Evangelista; (2) Tanji Johnston; (3)
Jeff Cogley.
Advanced Juniors: (1) Robert Lake;
(2) Jim Opilla; (3) Scott Truax.
Under United States Judo Association
rules, the divisions are determined
through a weight and age combination of
point assignment.
Softball’s pre-season ends
The 57th Black Knights and CFK Ambas-
sadors are tied with one loss each in
the double elimination tourney with the
playoff scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
The 57th got there the hard way by
winning three games Tuesday after win-
ning two on Sunday and Monday.
CFK advanced to the finals by defeat-
ing SPECCOM 10-3, AirOps 14-0, Comptrol-
ler 18-7 and NSGA 9-7 before losing 8-2
to the Black Knights.
The Knights lost to Supply 12-2 and
then swept through the losers bracket,
beating High School 20-7, Grindy 5-4,
Rec 13-12, Compt 12-1, Rockville 10-1,
NSGA 7-3 and CFK 8-2.
NSGA finished third. Moose Swaney
of NCS, and a former member of the House
of David, had three homers in one game
to lead the power display while many
fielders excelled.
57th looms as the team to beat while
NSGA has outstanding pitching and a good
defense.
CFK has the pitching while Grindy
will be a threat as long as Randy
Spillers can carry his big bat to the
plate.
Sup-
Goose"
Comptroller will score runs and
ply has scoring Jim Payne and
Gosnell to lead the defense,
Recreation has Long Tom Evans to
lead the attack and pitching ace Paul
Hamrick.
Rockville ' has a solid team which
finishedl fourth in the tourney. Hosp
“lost most of their big guns, however,
defending champs are champs until beat-
en. NCS has the power, but the Big
is lacking. Weapons has their sec
weapon Diane while Det 1 and Det 3 will
sneak upon you.
Eight teams did not play in the
tourney, so they have the chance to
scout the opposition. The Special Ser-
at-
* I
vices grounds crew was outstanding
throughout the tourney as they came up
with a first in Iceland.
Mark Albers was proud of his pitch-
er's line which was very conspicuous
from home plate to the pitcher's mound
to aid the rookies and wild pitchers.
Now, if Mark can onlv find th£ key to
the first and third base coaches' box,
the season will be ready to start.
Golf league swings into action
Sixteen teams answered the ring of
the bell for 1976. Play will begin on
Wednesday afternoons unless agreed
otherwise. All golfers are notified.
You must pay to play. Tickets are
available at the gym.
Attention, golfers: Anyone interest-
ed in establishing a handicap, go to the
gym, pay a green fee, pick up a score
card, and write full name, command, duty
phone and date. After playing a round,
turn the card into the gym. Cards will
be picked up daily and handicap computed
with a listing posted in the gym.
Attention women golfers: The tournar
ment director is planning a Lady's tour-
ney. Any woman interested in playing,
contact Mrs. Bayne at 2101.
