Base Scouts attend
International Camporee
Twenty-five NATO Base Girl Scouts and
leaders attended a four-day Internation-
al Camporee at Krysuvik last weekend
with more than 300 Icelandic scouts and
leaders.
The base scouts were invited to the
annual camporee by a Hafnarfjordur troop
leader who, one leader explained, "had
met with American scouts and was anxious
to promote an exchange of ideas."
Girl Scout Cadette Troop Two, led by
Mrs. Diane Charles, Mrs. Arlene Compton
and Mrs. Pam Haft, officially represent-
ed NATO Base scouts at the Camporee.
Neighborhood Chairman, Mrs. Diane
Tuton, attended as an observer, as did
two Junior Girl Scout leaders and three
Junior Scouts.
Mrs. Tuton, who assumed the Neighbor-
hood Chairman post in April, termed the
camporee a "great success."
"The girls learned a lot about Ice-
landic culture and met several scouts.
They came back with at least one Ice-
landic scout friend, and many of them
exchanged addresses and telephone num-
bers with their hosts."
Mrs. Charles said her troop Of Cadet-
tes were included in all activities dur-
ing the four-day program.
"The final campfire late Sunday night
showed that new friendships had been
made, when some of our girls were called
by name by some of the Icelandic units
to participate in ceremonies," she said.
The camporee began at midnight Friday
with an opening ceremony, and ended Mon-
day at 2 p.m. with a closing ceremony.
The weekend activities included moun-
tain climbing; "wide games" which teach
first-aid, navigation, and outdoor
skills; Scout Olympics which test the
scouts in teamwork, first-aid, fire
building, stream fording, flag pole and
tent erecting; songfests around camp-
fires, and free-time for establishing
friendships.
The NATO Base troop won an award for
the cleanest campsite, and each of the
three Cadette patrols won several points
in different competitions.
Mrs. Charles said one of the Iceland-
ic leaders commented on the dignity and
respect with which the Cadette troop
held morning and evening colors.
"She said it was obvious our girls
place much value on our flag and what it
stands for," Mrs. Charles explained.
The Cadettes worked in three patrols
over the weekend, policing their camp-
site , cooking and cleaning and perform-
ing the many tasks associated with out-
door living.
Patrol 1 called themselves the Snow
Snakes at the camporee. Michele Malli-
cote is patrol leader; Janet Compton,
Kim Mossman, Gretchen Hiller and Terri
Parham are members.
Debby Kltterman is Patrol 2 leader.
The Busy Bumblebees are Mari Ella Thay-
er, Wanda Eason, Karen Doyle and Jaleen
Lifgren.
Patrol 3, the Superstars of '76, is
led by Pam Ratliff. Heidi Hiller, June
McCreary, Penny Snyder and Linda Jo Pao-
lozzi are in the patrol.
Junior Troop Three Leader, Mrs. Jack-
ie Johnson, and her daughters Jennifer
and Wendy, also scouts; and Assistant
Leader of Junior Troop One, Mrs. Nancy
Johnston and her daughter, Tanji, a Jun-
ior Scout, attended the camporee as ob-
servers .
