Softball-games of the week
Judo tourney held here
The Viking Judo Club, under the di-
rection of Sensi G. Morse, with the help
of the Recreation Department, sponsored
a judo tournament Saturday at the Base
Gym. The Keflavik (Icelandic) Judo Club
and two members of the Mucnchen-Bayern
Judo Club of Munich, Germany were
matched in above and below 170-pound
weight classes.
About 20 six-minute matches were
played to determine a first, second and
third place winner in both classes. The
Icelandic team took first place in both
classes and second in the lightweight
division. Jeff Morse took second for
the Munich team in the heavyweight
class. For the Viking Judo Club, third
in the heavyweight division went to Ron
Hartman and third in the lightweight
class went to Mike Haulman.
The Viking Judo Club was represented
by seven members and the Keflavik Club
had six members present.
A participant must earn one point to
win a match. The point can be earned
with a throw, pinning an opponent for 30
seconds or more, a choke or an arm bar
(leverage against the elbow).
The old underdog arose again as
NAVFAC bit a chunk out of an overcon-
fident NSGA Intermediate softball team.
NSGA showed-up with only seven men to
play NAVFAC.
NAVFAC scored 20 runs by the fourth
inning, but they barely held NSGA in
check as NSGA scored nine runs in the
sixth inning and four in the seventh to
make a close, exciting contest. The
winning runs were on base when the third
out was made. "Don't sell the underdogs
short," commented NAVFAC coach Jim
Nickels.
The leading hitters for NAVFAC were:
Carl Drinkwater 4/4, Rocky Thompson 3/4
with a homer, Cliff Roberts 3/3 and
Goldy Comstack 3/4. For NSGA, the lead-
ing hitters were: John Pozniack 5/6,
Randy Williams 5/5 with a homer and Lou
Kutzera 4/6 with a homer.
In the second softball game of the
week, AFI beat Det. 14, 17-15, in a real
thriller. Bill McMultry hit a three-run
homer in the bottom of the seventh to
seal the verdict. McMultry, Mike
Southard, Buster Keaton, Homer Darcy and
Doc Holliday all had 3/4 for AFI. It
was Hank Wyman 4/4 and Charley Hart,
Jim Maul and Rick Patchin all had 3/4
for Det. 14. API's winning pitcher was
Jack Liverman and Leo Crites was the
pitcher for Det. 14.
Close games were the usual rather
than the exception this week. The
Marines dropped a hard fought game to
the Green Waves, 15-14. The Marines
scored seven runs in the top of the
seventh, seemingly putting the game out
of the Green Waves’ reach, but on a
ralley in the bottom of the seventh, the
Green Waves also scored seven runs.
Hitting heros were: Don Morse 4/4,
Wally Lei a 3/4, Bill Stone 3/4 and Frank
Balsley 3/4 for the Green Waves and
Bobby Strohl and Steve Romeo hit 3/4
for the Marines. Steve Pontuis was the
pitcher for the Marines and Sidney
Greenback picked-up his first win of the
season for the Green Waves, the Comp-
troller team.

Payne hits 7-7
Jim Payne of Supply was chosen the |
player of the week among many worthy ’
opponents. Jim hit 750 in Slowpitch and^
a perfect 7-7 in Intermediate Softball.
He helped his team sweep five games this
week.
In Intermediate, Jim plays catcher—
his best position. He plays an adequate
third base in Slowpitch.
They call him "rope" for the line
drives he hits in Intermediate while in
Slowpitch he also gets his share of
hits. Jim has a very accurate arm that
keeps runners close to their bases. He
loves softball and enjoys the challenge
of competition.
