Hvitarbakki—a quiet hideaway
About 100 miles northeast of the NATO Base is a quiet hideaway called Hvitarbakki.
This guest lodge, located on a working farm, has eight bedrooms, a large kitchen for
guests' use, lounge and sauna. The lodge is open 10 months of the year.
The farm is located in a peaceful, picturesque farming area that offers many oppor-
tunities for sightseeing in short day trips. Some of the points of interest include hot
springs, beautiful and unusual waterfalls, the largest cave in Iceland and many hiking
and mountain climbing areas. The town of Borganes is 20 miles away. It offers shopping
facilities and a hotel with a very fine restaurant.
For the more adventuresome, there is fishing available on the Hvitar River on the
lodge grounds and arrangements can be made to fish in the rivers and lakes in the area.
Horseback riding is available through the neighbor farmers. Hunting is in season August
through March for all members of the NATO Base Rod and Gun Club. There are campsites in
abundance for the camper and heated pools are open in the area in the summer for the
swimmer.
The rates for the Hvitarbakki Lodge are very reasonable. Campers are charged 50c per
person per night. In the lodge, the charge for a bedroom is $3 per person a night,
children can sleep in their parents' room in sleeping bags for $1 per night per child.
