KBA Marathon
Dave Haviland's 100th game at 8:30
a.m. Sunday brought the Keflavik Bowling
Association's marathon to its finale,
raising $1,423.37 for the KBA scholar-
ship fund.
The marathon rolled off at midnight
Oct. 15, with three members of the men's
bowling association and three members of
the women's bowling association partici-
pating.
When the marathon was announced three
weeks ago, plans were for each partici-
pant to bowl from midnight Oct. 15 to
midnight Oct. 17 or 100 games apiece.
However, the event fell short of its
projected goal when five participants
pulled out halfway through, leaving Dave
Haviland to see it through.
At that stage of the marathon, Dave,
continuing alone at 12:30 a.m. Sunday
and determined to finish his 100 games,
nets $1,423.37
said, "I've got too many people behindl
me to quit now. I'm going for that 10^
for some students who can use the money
to further their education."
Dave continued on and, after reaching
his goal, exhausted, but smiling enthu-
siastically, said, "I'm proud of all the
participants, especially the women who
gave their 100 per cent efforts."
Marathon pledges and breakdown:
Marlene Hueber 41 games— including
personal pledge of $75-----------$193.65
Carol Holmes 41 games $120.15
Sharon Everhart 47 games $77.27
Bob Kalinowski 42 games $77.70
Bud Quinn 50 games $95.00
Dave Haviland 100 games $732.50
Walk in pledges $127.10
The money raised from the marathon
will be given to a graduating student or
students of A.T. Mahan class of 1976-77.
Fall basketball season to begin
by Rene Mahone
The fall basketball season will soon
begin.
Three leagues based on ability are
planned to determine individual team
standing for their league placement.
A pre-season tournament is scheduled in
early November.
The teams have been working out to
prepare for the competition.
Based on pre-season workouts, Medi-
cal, ComSta and VP-49 rate as favorites
to capture league crowns.
Working hard to compete with these
favorites are the A.T. Mahan High
School Vikings, who made a strong show-
ing in the football league. Although
much younger than other base teams, the
Vikings will depend on conditioning to
keep up with the more experienced teams.
The early play of Frank King, the
sophomore from Reykjavik, has been an
eye-catcher for Coach Jerry Smith. Ac-
cording to Smith, King has been the
playmaker in his workouts. Smith says
he has good potential from the student
crop who reported to practice.
In addition to King, returning let-
terman Donn Haviland and Tony Felton
should help the Vikings in their quest
for the championship.
For the first time in their school
history, the A.T. Mahan High School will
field a junior varsity team, composed
mainly of junior high students. The
junior Norsemen will not compete in the
base league, but will compete with local
Icelandic cltibs such as the Sundlaug
Njardvikur in Njardvik.
Randy Kitterman and Bill Waites have
shown potential in becoming polished
players. Although small, the junior
Norsemen should do veil against the Ice-
land ers
A dark horse in the base league is
AIMD, who will be led by Julio Nieves,
the great playmaker from last year's
medical team.
Nieves was the leading scorer last
year with a 21-point game average which
won him the most valuable player award.
In addition, he was selected for the
base All-Star Team for having led his
team to a 32-0 record during league
play.
A basketball clinic was held Monday
through Wednesday at the COMFAIRKEF con-
ference room for coaches and officials.
Rules were discussed, with local ad-
aptations and alterations being incor-
porated for smoother league play.
Plans call for league games to be
played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
for the men, with women taking the
court on Tuesday and Thursday.
With the quality of players and num-
ber of teams, it should prove to be an
interesting season for the roundballers.
Due to the upcoming holiday, deadline for next week's classified ads is noon
Tuesday.
