VP-49 takes preseason crown
The 1976 preseason basketball tourna-
ment was won by the VP-49 "Woodpeckers"
who defeated NCS, 43-37, H-3, 52-37,
Det. 14, 49-69, 57th FIS, 44-36, and
Rockville, 51-34.
Enroute to the championship, Kenneth
Ritsin led the Woodpeckers with an 18-
Gold sweeps Blue 43-27
Led by returning letterwoman, Hafais
Austin, the Gold team swept the Blue
team from the court, 43-27, in girls’
basketball held at the Viking Field-
house, the home of the A. T. Mahan Vik-
ingnettes.
The first half was rather close with
little scoring, but, in the second half,
Austin found the range as she scored 10
field goals by driving past her defen-
sive girl. Blue failed to make the
necessary adjustments which allowed
Austin to score.
Austin scored 20 points to lead all
scorers, and was closely followed by
newcomer Robin Hollier who tallied 14
points for the Blue squad.
The game was a finale to preseason
tryouts for the Vikingnette team, coach-
ed by Rene Mahone.
Out of 28 players who had signed up
for the squad, only 12 were selected.
The competition was keen, making it dif-
ficult for the coach to decide on the
final squad.
Three Vikingnette letterwomen return
this year: High scoring Austin, Wanda
Felton, a forward and Cherye Martin, who
was a defensive specialist last year.
Much is counted on Martin, who must
convert to offensive play, because this
is the first time in league play that
the girls will follow boys’ rules. The
girls will have only five starters and
must play the entire court. Condition-
ing should make the difference in league
play.
League play will begin Tuesday with
three games on tap. Games are scheduled
for Mondays and Thursdays, ending in
February.
It is too early to pick a favorite in
league play, but the Vikingnettes are a
strong contender for league crowns.
There will be two rounds and each round
champion will have a playoff for the
title.
point average as he handled the ball
well to pace their attack.
The Rockets defeated Weather, 57-30,
AFI, 48-28, NAVFAC, 31-28, Hospital, 57-
54, in overtime before losing to the
Woodpeckers.
The tournament had many close games
which points towards a competitive sea-
son since teams have been grouped ac-
cording to ability.
VP-49 will rule as favorite for the
first half, however, they will leave be-
fore the season ends.
57th FIS will probably be slightly
favored in the stronger division of the
"A" league with the "B" division up for
grabs.
In the "C" league, Weather and Public
Works are early favorites.
Six teams will play in recreation
ball with IDF, defending champs, as
favorites.
In ladies’ ball, six teams will play
with not much preseason action, however,
coaches Rene Mahone, High School and Ron
Berry, NCS claim they have the horses,
or fillies and mares, at least to win it
all.
Base team bows to Vikings
The base volleyball team lost two
series with the Icelandic National team,
the Vikings, at the base gym last week.
The visitors won the first game, 15-7
and lost the second, 15-8, scoring
15-13, 15-13 and 15-8.
The base team then took the first
15-13 and lost 15-5, 15-10, 15-5 and
15-10.
The games were hotly contested
despite the 4-1 edge each day as Bob
Simister was the outstanding player for
both sides.
Sports shorts
The intramural racquetball season is
scheduled to begin Nov. 15 with about 15
entries. Pete Hershfield's team looks
like the favorite.
The fall wrestling smoker will be
held Nov. 20-21. According to Dick
Plante, athletic director, all units are
urged to play and individuals may enter
also by calling 5191. Weights will be
by college weight scale as much as pos-
sible.
