Twas the Night
Before Christmas . . .
‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through
the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse,
When down through the chimney all covered with
soot,
Came the “Spirit Of Fire’’—an ugly galoot.
His eyes glowed like embers, his features were
stern,
As he looked all around for something to burn.
What he saw made him grumble, his anger grew
higher,
For there wasn’t a thing that would start a good fire.
No door had been blocked by the big Christmas
tree;
It stood in the corner leaving passageways free.
The lights that glowed brighdy for Betty and Tim,
Had been hung with precaution so none touched a
limb.
All wiring was new, not a break could be seen,
And wet sand at its base kept the tree nice and
green.
The tree had been trimmed by a mother insistent
That the ornaments used be fire resistant.
And mother had known the things to avoid,
Like cotton and paper and plain celluloid.
Rock wool, metal icicles and trinkets of glass,
Gave life to the tree; it really had class.
And would you believe it, right next to the tree
Was a suitable box for holding debris.
A place to throw wrappings of paper and string,
From all of the gifts that Santa might bring.
The ugly galoot was so mad he could bust,
As he climbed up the chimney in utter disgust.
For the folks in this home had paid close attention,
To all the rules of good “Fire Prevention.”
News briefs
Telephone transactions
Beginning Monday, no telephone busi-
ness will be conducted at Building 839,
according to Commander D. J. Monarch,
Public Works officer.
All applications for the installation
of telephones must be made at the Hous-
ing Office, Building 937 between 9 a.m.
and 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and
9 a.m. until noon Friday.
This action, the commander suggests,
can be easily accomplished when accept-
ing quarters at the Housing Office.
When paying final bills, arrangements
can be made by calling 4500 in the morn-
ing and then picking up the bill at
Building 937 between 2 and 3 p.m. Monday
through Thursday—this will facilitate
payment at the bank the same day.

Exam time changed

Military flights...
It was reported in last week''s
White Falcon that military travelers
on E and M flights must wear a uni-
form.
Military personnel may wear civil-
ian clothing when taking E and M
flights provided that their orders,
leave authorization, or the foreign
clearance guide requires the wearing
of civilian clothing at the point
which travelers are scheduled to em-
bark or disembark.
On C-141 flights, military person-
nel must be in appropriate uniform.
Personnelman Seaman Graham D. Hughes
of Patrol Squadron FORTY-NINE was se-
lected Commander Naval Forces Iceland
Sailor of the Quarter for the period
PNSN Graham D. Hughes
ending Dec. 31, 1976.
His selection was announced early be-
cause of VP-49's scheduled departure
from Keflavik next week.
The board, in selecting the service-
man for the honor, considered such fac-
tors as self-improvement efforts, parti-
cipation in military and community pro-
grams, creativity and adaptability, and
personal appearance and military bear-
ing.
Seaman Hughes reported to VP-49 di-
rectly from Personnelman "A” school and
was assigned the job of originating and
handling the squadron's temporary addi-
tional duty orders, a billet normal.lv
assigned to an E-5 or E-6. Not only did
he perform his job in an exemplary man-
ner but also found time to further his
college education in night school and
actively participate in a Naval Station
Bible study group called "The Naviga-
tors."
In the letter of recommendation for-
warded to COMNAVICE by the commanding
officer of VP-49, Seaman Hughes was de-
scribed as the essence of the "New
Navy's" young professional. He performs
his duties zealously and with a level of
competency and maturity well beyond his
21 years. He uses his off-duty time to
further his own educational development
and through his extra military activi-
ties makes himself an asset to the com-
munity-at-large, as well as the Navy.
Seaman Hughes, who calls Alexandria,
VA, his home, will depart with VP-49 on
Wednesday, heading for Jacksonville, FL.

A holiday message...
As the holiday season nears, and out
thoughts turn to the ever-constant sym-
bols of joy and peace which surround us
at this time, Mrs. Bernstein and I would
like to extend our personal wishes for
happiness to each member of the Defense
Force family.
While some of us will have the oppor-
tunity of traveling home for the holi-
days, others may find it strange facing
this traditional season in a foreign
land. Let us look at it as an opportu-
nity to add to our own traditions
throuqh the colorful ones of Iceland and
for families here to experience an even
closer sharing and to extend their hos-
pitality to those who are alone.
Once again we face a season of re-
newed hope in the deepest darkness of
the year. With this in mind then, we
wish to extend to each of you and your
loved ones a sincere wish for a Holy
Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New
Year.
Karl J. Bernstein,
Rear Admiral, USN
Commander,
Iceland Defense Force
