Roll-off champs win again
BEQ Managers take top kegling
in base championship lane action
Vikings slate Wrestle-O-Rama
tomorrow after 2 weeks’ prep
The A.T. Mahan Vikings will stage the
Wrestle-O-Rama tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the
Base Gym after two weeks of competition.
Twenty-two male entries reached the
finals through preliminary matches held
after school in the gym.
There are 12 weight divisions with
two boys having made it in two categor-
ies, Tim Spencer, a 119 pounder, and
Darryl Cogley, a 129 pound senior, will
compete in two divisions each.
Spencer, a lithe speedster, will com-
pete in the 119 and 126 class rates as a
favorite in both directions.
Cogley, who uses brute strength in
his matches will go against speedy Frank
King in the 132 pound class and against
Paul Gilstrap in the 138 pound bracket.
What shapes up to be a real scraper
is the 98 pound class where Barry Simp-
son and Mike Martinez will meet in the
afternoon bout.
Simpson is a fierce competitor and
perhaps the most aggressive wrestler of
the group.
Martinez has come from an early de-
feat by Simpson and has battled his way
to the finals.
Simpson calls Martinez the toughest
battler he has yet faced. He indicated
that he must go all out if he hopes to
defeat Martinez.
The strongest wrestler can be found
in tfte 155 pound class with newcomer Tom
Chapman who will pit his might against
senior Brad Adams.
The BEQ Managers, for the second time
in three years, have won the Base Cham-
pionship Roll Off. The roll off was
held Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 3 at the
Arctic Lanes. It was made up of first
and second place teams of all the in-
tramural bowling leagues. The compet-
ition was a 10-game event, with the team
with the highest pin count winning the
tournament.
The Managers were in the fifth place
after the first round (three games), and
came back even stronger on the second
round, moving up in to second place af-
ter the sixth game. The Managers then
trailed the tournament leader, Weather,
by 92 pins.
At the end of the third round (ninth
game), and going into the final round
(position round), the Managers remained
in second place, behind Rockville whose
team moved up to first from third place,
by 60 pins.
The Managers, with 90 pin handicap
against Rockville's 170, went into the
final game- 140 pins behind.
The game was close until the eighth
frame, when the Managers canght up with
Rockville. It was so close that at the
end of the last frame, the Managers won
by 21 pins.
The total 10-game score was BEO,
9824, Rockville, 9803.

Most experienced
The most experienced wrestler of the
group is Dennis Farrell who captured a
second in the last base smoker. His
match may well be the highlight of the
meet because he will go against Tony
Felton in the unlimited weight divisipn.
Felton, who doubles in basketball for
the Vikings, does not possess the finesse
of Farrell, but will rely on his two
plain assets: size and strength.
Opening bout
The opening bout may prove the most
interesting when 67 pound Mitch Cowart
will compete against 70 pounder Paul
Bevins. Both contenders will rely on
speed and quickness which they used to
reach the finals.
Underdogs progress
The surprise to date has been the
progress of the two underdogs: Mark
Young in 105 pound class and newcomer
Mike Woods. Neither one was seeded to
reach the finals but determination and
desire proved that they must be reckoned
with by their opponents.

Special seating
Tournament director Rene Mahone,
who teaches physical education at
the school, invites base personnel
to witness the matches, especially
those who intend to compete in the
base smoker in March.
He has indicated that a special
seating section will be held for the
competing wrestlers' parents.
Principal to officiate
Loyd Morrow, school principal,
will be head official for the bouts.
He has had extensive experience in
wrestling, having officiated and
coached the sport since 1964.
His teams won titles while he was
teaching in Germany at Frankfurt and
Zweibruecken.
He wrestled in college at South-
ern Oregon College in the 148 pound
class.
A certified referee, he will re-
quire that all matches are scored ac-
cording to USDESEA Tournament rules.
