Page 4 White Falcon February 18, 1977 Mahan Gold throws Blue, 33-20 Saturday afternoon, the A.T. Mahan Gold matmen defeated the Blue grapplers, 33-20, in the first Wrestle-0-Rama held in the base gym. Of the eleven matches, only one went the full three rounds, won on a 10-1 decision by Mitch Cowart over Paul Bevines in the 80 and under weight division. All other matches ended in pins and one default. In the opening match, Mitch Cowart maintained control over his opponent, Paul Bevins, who struggled against his stronger foe. The agile Cowart took a quick 6-1 lead in the first round, ^coring two points in each of the next two rounds to capture the 80 and under division title, giving the Gold team an unrelinquished 3-0 lead. In the 90 pound division, Dan 0*Connor wasted little time with his op- ponent, Scott Miller, pinning him in 12 seconds of the first round; O'Connor was credited with the afternoon's fastest pin, showing his finesse and skill in the brief match. In the 98 pound division, aggressive Barry Simpson proved too much for Mike Martinez, with a 1:06 pin in the second round. When making the pin, Simpson commanded a 7-0 lead, and showed his strength throughout the match. A heartbreaker came in the 105 weight class when Mark Young suffered a broken collar bone, defaulting his match to powerful Bobby Kendall. Kendall held an 8-0 lead when the injury occurred. In a scrapping battle, Mike Woods prevailed over Robert Mitchell with a hard fought win. Woods took a quick 6-2 lead in the first round, and extended it 10-4 midway through the second. In the latter part of the second, Woods pinned Mitchell and nailed his opponent down in 1:58. In the 119 pound class, Josh Forsman was simply overmatched with Tim Spencer who took a 9-1 lead in the first round, based on near falls and reversals. In the second round, Spencer continued his attack and, with 33 seconds left, pinned Game of the week AFI Security was chosen for game of the week by defeating Grindy, 48-44. The halftime score was 30-16. Ron Ethington recorded the winning basket in a driving layup. High point men for AFI Security were Mark Semach (2), Ron Ethington (12) and Jo.Winters (14). Top scorers for the Grindy team were Randy Spillers (12) and Richard Hurley (16). The "Southern Bells" of the Icebreak- ers League have captured the title of Women's Base Champions in the KWBA Base Roll-Offs held Feb. 7 and 8 at the Arc- tic Lanes. The "Southern Bells" (P. Widenor, S. Scammell, S. Gourley and M. Parker) won with a total pins score of 4080 with handicap. They took the lead away from the "Grindy Grinders" of the Northern Lights during the fourth game of play and fought to hold it through to the end, beating "Grindy" (second place) by a mere three pins - OWC Winter league league standing: High average: Terry Souhrada 150 Ora Knutty 149 Loida Hopper 146 Team standings: 1st Team #4 48-28 2nd Team 7/6 45-31 3rd Team //7 42-34 High game: Terry Souhrada 191 Lou Hall 173 Doris Foy 172 his opponent. In the 132 pound class, Frank King overpowered his opponent, Darryl Cogley, pinning him in a first round 1:08. King used his speed to maneuver Cogley quick- ly in a pinning position, and then ap- plied his strength for the win. However, Cogley redeemed himself in the 138 pound class to pin his opponent, Paul Gilstrap, in 1:30 of the second round. Gilstrap fought gamely, but. Cogley proved too strong for the 138 pound senior. The 145 pound class produced the sec- ond fastest pin when Jeff O’Brien in- stantly pinned John Auburn, who was seemingly overwhelmed by the muscular freshman. O'Brien produced the pin in 35 seconds into the first round. A match produced blood in the 155 pound class when Brad Adams suffered nu- merous cuts from Tom Chapman. The match remained equal until the second round when Adams commandeered the lead, and worked his opponent into a pinning situ- ation, applying the clincher with 32 seconds into the round. In the unlimited class, Dennis Farrell gave away some 20 pounds to his opponent, Tony Felton. For a first round toss up, Felton used his size by spreading his feet, preventing the smaller Farrell to maneuver his oppo- nent. Felton then used his strength to flip Farrell several times in the first round. Farrell showed some fine wrestling moves to take a 4-2 lead over Felton. In the second round, Farrell, using his speed, quickly got Felton into a pinning situation. Felton fought to a- void the pin, but Farrell held his posi- tion and, 35 seconds in the second round, Farrell executed the winning pin. According to the tournament director, Rene Mahone, the meet was a success as evidenced by numerous parents who atten- ded; a number or'participants will re- ceive their awards during a school as- • sembly to honor them and their achieve- ments . Pleyer of the week Phil Miller took player of the week for his outstanding contribu- tion in the Hospital team's success last week. Miller's long jumpshobs and drives are among his repertoire of shots. The top two teams from the Northern Lights, Powder Puffs and Icebreakers Leagues competed for the championship, with each team bowling a series of six games for total pins. Betty Silsby rolled the highest three game scratch series with a 500. She al- so bowled the high game scratch of the roll-off with 187. The champions will be awarded en- graved wall plaques.
