Women's league tightened
NCS sneaks by Coolcats 3-2
The softball race in the women’s league
tightened up this week with NCS sneaking
by the Coolcats in a 3-2 ball game to
throw each team into a tie for third with
the newly formed NSGA team.
Farnsworth and Gardener went two for
three at the plate to assist NCS pitcher
Pardoe in the victory.
Navy Exchange, pulling out of a 3-2
victory over NSGA in the bottom of the
fifth inning was not as fortunate Sat-
urday, losing to the Rockets, 13-3.
Kohler pitched a six-hitter for the
undefeated Rockets, but received help
with some fine defensive plays, coming
from Steigy and Dodd.
Niemeyer, a recent addition to the
Rockets, along with second baseman
Hollier, managed three hits in three
trips to the plate.
Commodores dumps NSGA 1-0
by Dick Plante
The NSGA Guardians lost their first
game in really defensive action, 1-0, to
the Admin Commodores.
Pitching was great as both pitchers
had a no-hitter going for five innings.
Terry Smith almost achieved his gem
with only a lone hit, walk and error,
spoiling his perfect game.
With one out in the bottom of the
seventh, Joe Medina singled, and Loyd
Cheatham sent him to third with Max
Bishop, delivering the only run on a
sacrifice fly to center Terry Smith.
This play almost entered the hall of
fame where only Ralph Bernier of NAVFAC
rests for pitching a no-hitter.
Bob Manges gave up four hits for the
Guardians.
Marines edge Air Ops 6-5 in 10 innings
The Marines eked out Air Ops, 6-5, in
a 10-inning thriller.
Air Ops scored lone runs in the second
and fifth; the Marines obtained three in
the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the sixth, Air Ops tied the game
5-5 on singles by Paul Bayne and "Slim"
Pickens and a triple by Douglas Duplayer.
The score was tied until the tenth
when hits by Mike McCormick, Jose
Morales and Steve Smith ended the well-
played marathon.
