Page 4 White Falcon July 22, 1977 Editorial on "class” There are many definitions for the word 'class' in sports. To mention a few^it could be called rising to the oc- casion when perhaps not the best or per- serving under extreme pressure on a win- ning side. On a losing side it is the ability to accept defeat with grace. Everyone hates to lose who is a true competitor, however, many can say "I have class" when they lose. Little things such as shaking an opponent's hand and not blaming officals for your defeats are considered parts of class. Anyone who wins consistently gets votes for class when he gets confronted with a particularly gulling loss and takes it in stride. Class is also keeping a level head during a tight contest. No one can play when angry or overly excited. Keeping a level head and accepting a controversial call can help a team or individual be ready for his best effort when the crisis arises. Very few players have a tendency to 'hot dog' it ever show much class under fire. Class many also be the ability to sit on the bench and cheer for your team even if you feel you should be playing. Accepting the manager's decision and re- specting it shows class. A true team player will usually have a high degree of class. Faith in your teammate's a- bility improves your own performance and brings out that little something extra in tight situations. All this is a part of class. In closing I would like to congratu- late our station softball team for a superb display of class. From the man- ager Joe Miexner to the last substitute they showed me class in all the hand drills and practice periods we went through to field the best team possible. All hands competed but rooted for each other while competing. They had what you call an even keel when playing and competing. They got off to a poor start against the League All Stars, who were a very good team and came back to clearly demonstrate their superiority. All season Joe Miexner was observed in his managing of the 57 FIS Black Knight. He passed down his class to his team who are tied for first in the intramural league while not perhaps possessing the best all around talent. I predict that Joe will lead the team to victory in their next tournament because when the games get close he has that intangible something called class to help him be a winner. VP-24 has talent Within the American slowpitch league two teams are in a two way race for first. VP-24 has the stronger team; however, the 57A has risen to the Black Knights by one run. The pitching of Tay Stone has been a strong asset for 57A, but the all a- round power, defense ability and im- proved pitching by Jim Mike has made VP-24 the favorites. Nav Fac, AFI Sec. and 57B share four losses in a very tight battle for first. AFI. Sec. has had rotation problems while Nav. Fac. has internal unrest. Rockville leads division Rockville has blasted a three game lead in the second half over NCS and NSGA in intermediate action. Despite Kevin Gallagher's expert re- cruiting, AFI hasn't been able to make a run for the pennant. Bigstep next Willow Groove is the next stop for the Station Team as they emerged as the 4th Naval District Champions. The tourney was close all the way, despite an, 8-7, loss to Portsmouth, The Naval Station's slowpitch team came out of the losers' bracket to defeat Ports- mouth twice by a score of, 12-9 and 3-2, on the final day after disposing Bruns- wick earlier. The Station Team won, 11-4, over USS Brumby and, 8-7, over Brunswick before the final day heroics ended.
