Fire!... can be a Killer
By Andrew Curl
Fire is a friend and enemy. Millions of people each year
are killed in fire. A lot of them are caused from
carelessness of people. You should be very careful about the
house for little things that can start big fires such as:
overloaded sockets, carelessly stored gasoline or any flam-
able liquid, any draperies or other fire targets away from
heaters or stoves. Just to be on the safe side have a alarm
or smoke detector installed and buy a fire extinguisher and
keep it where it's easy to reach and make sure it's capable
of putting out fire. If there is a fire don’t panic, just
find a phone to call the fire dept. You already should have
several escape routes so if one is blocked off you
can take the other. Make sure everybody's out of the house,
and people please be safe, would you?

Smoketown
By Charles Dearmond
Once upon a time we were in a forest when we came upon a
little town. There seemed to be just everything. There were
telephones, cars, stores. There was a police station. But
when we asked for the fire department, everyone said they had
never heard of one.
One of the families we talked to said, "What is a fire
department?" Well, we asked if we could come in their house.
When we went in, we had the shock of our lives. There were
all four burners on high on the stove. We asked them why and
they said, "Because we do not want to have to turn them off
and on every time we use the stove." There was a whole
bunch of worn out wires left out. We asked them why and they
said, "They work just as well as new ones." They had cans of
paint and gas all over in the garage. We asked them why and
they said, "It is easier to find things than when it's put
away."
We went back to the house and it was time for supper. We
went in and ate a good supper. Then we asked if we could
spend the night. That night we could not sleep. Then the
lady called us. When we got there they both were smoking in
bed. Then we thought it was time to tell them what could
happen if they left the burners on, left cans of paint and
gas out, didn't get new cords, and if they don't stop
smoking in bed.
The next morning it was time to leave. After we left
there was hardly ever a fire in Smoketown.
The Naval Station Fire Department has
completed another successfull fire pre-
vention campaign. Unless you have been
on leave for the last month you couldn't
help but notice the supreme effort put
fourth by Fire Cheif S. R. Eirikson
arid the entire fire department staff.
In addition to passing fire preven-
tion information through radio,
television, the base newspaper, the
Plan of the Day and numerous billboards
placed throughout the base, the Fire
Department provided lectures and fire
extinguishing demonstrations to nearly
3,000 people.
Operation EDITH
Between 90 - 100 percent of the
families on base "made a date with
EDITH" on Oct. 14. Deputy Fire Chief
H. Stefansson explained the Exit I)rill
In The Home (EDITH) program on
television prior to the actual exercise.
Then on Friday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m.
sirens sounded, ’announcements were aired
over the media and fire vehicles drove
through the housing areas with sirens
Blaring and lights flashing. Members
of private homes then left their
dwellings by a preplanned escape route.
In the weeks prior to EDITH members
of the department visited each and every
home on the base, inspected for fire
hazards, checked out fire alarms and
discussed fire prevention and safety
with the family members.
School children were also in on the
action by providing art, essays, and
slogans to help save lives from fire.
Why invest all this time, energy and
effort into a program when you seemingly
have nothing to show for it when it's
over? Well, if one person takes the
time to put out a cigaret out instead of
leaving it laying on the edge of a
table, or someone learns how to test the
their fire alarm and does it and one
life is saved as a result of their
actions — the effort was worth while.
Without a doubt, everyone on the
Keflavik NATO base is now "aware"
of the hazards and danger involved with
the careless use of fire.
Fire Prevention
BY Niels Christensen
I was going to a friend's house to spend the night. When
I got there I realized I wouldn't get too much sleep. All
around there were fire hazards. As I stepped through the
door I noticed and almost stepped on an uninsulated wire. 1
asked my friend why he Didn't fix it because it was a fire
hazard. He said his dad would fix it sooner or later.
We walked into the kitchen to get something to eat. Then
I saw that all four burners were on and nobody else was
around. I turned them off and asked why his mother hadn't
turned them off when she left. He said she was probably
waiting for them to get hot enough. I said it was dangerous.
When it was time to go to bed we were passing his mom and
dad's room. His mother was reading and smoking in bed. Just
then an ash fell off her cigarette and landed on the bed.
Luckily she caught it and put it in the ashtray. That too
was a fire hazard.
Since his room was in the attic we had to go through it.
There was trash all over. It could have caught fire easily.
I told him about the fire hazard, but he didn't seem to care.
A few weeks after I left a fireman came to inspect their
house. It didn't pass and they had to dlean it up. It was
always clean and safe after that.

Why Smokey Bear has no tail
By Alan Pierce
It was a long time ago when Smokey was a little critter
just a looking for mischief. Well it was a hot July
afternoon when Smokey saw a camper do magic with just one
little stick! Now Smokey just loved the smell. The campers
left the next day.
Smokey went out in the campground looking for the sticks,
he found them a moment later. He thought that if they
smelled good they taste good but he was wrong. They tasted
horrible, so he tried the magic and it worked, it smelled
good, and it burned! He was confused that something that
smelled so good could burn. All that time the fire was
getting worse and burned him again and he ran! When he was
running he looked back and tripped on a stone! While he was
knocked out the fire came near! The fire was burning his
tail and he woke up and ran home. But by the time he had
got home his tail had fallen off! From that day on he has
been teaching all you little children not to play with
matches. So do what Smokey says and don't learn the hard
way.
