Marriage
encounter plann
Couples in Iceland will have the
'opportunity to enrich their marriage
and improve their communication Dec.
28 through Dec. 30.
This experience, called Marriage
Encounter, will be held at Hlidardal-
sskoli, a Seventh Day Adventist School
at Hlidardalur near Hveragerdi.
The special team priest will be
Brigadier General T. T. Thielen.
Chaplain Thielen was also the team
priest for the first Marriage En-
counter weekend held in July at
Skaholt.
Paul Claudel, the French poet, once
wrote, "God writes straight with crooked
lines."
Seemingly insignificant things may
have an important impact on the lives of
many people. Such was the case in 1952
when Father Gabriel Calvo, a Spanish
priest, met with couples who came to
him, seeking help in finding how to
serve God and others as a couple. That
meeting helped Father Calvo sense the
need for husbands and wives to deepen
their own relationship to realize the
tremendous apostolic potential that is
present in every Christian marriage.
Encuentro Conyugal
The first "Encuentro Conyugal" was
held and subsequently came to the United
States at the Christian Family Movement
conference at Notre Dame in 1967. From
that weekend, Marriage Encounter in the
United States had its beginning.
The Marriage Encounter experience is
designed to give couples the opportun-
ity to examine their lives together by
looking at the strong points and weak-
nesses, their attitudes, desires, am-
bitions, disappointments, joys and
frustrations. They do so openly and
honestly in a Christ-like, face-to-face,
heart-to-heart "encounter" with the one
person they have chosen to live with
for the rest of their lives.
The word "encounter" may be mis-
leading. It actually is derived from

IRS winner reports changed
The Department of the Navy Comptrol-
ler has issued a new ruling for report-
ing slot machine and bingo winnings to
the Internal Revenue Service.
Formerly, the open messes and cus-
todians of slot machines were required
to report persons who had aggregate
winnings of $600 or more in a calendar
year. The new ruling eliminates the
need for this reporting and states that
only persons whose one game winnings are
$1,200 or more are to be reported.
Since the maximum one-game winning
on slot machines is $75, this means that
slot machine winnings will no longer be
reported to IRS. Only single bingo
games which pay $1,200 or more will be
reported.
Liaison by the Chief of Naval Person-
nel with IRS has revealed, however, that
aggregate winnings over $600 during the
period Jan. 1 to April 30, 1977 must be
reported.
Slot and bingo winners should remem-
ber that all winnings are taxable in-
come and that it is the individual win-
ner's responsibility to report them to
IRS.

TOURS &
TRAVEL
By Nancy Walker
The Tour Office is now booking tours
to Mallorca. If you are interested,
contact the Tour Office at 4200.
Mallorca
Mallorca, with its 185-mile coast-
line, is the largest and one of the
most beautiful of the Mediterranean
islands. Mallorca's white sand beaches,
quaint little harbors and romantic
mountain villages act as hosts to about
a million visitors yearly.
Exploring the island
Although the island's vast array of
scenery is the main attraction to Mal-
lorca, there are several places of his-
torical value that every visitor will
want to see:
1. The Cathedral was begun in 1230
by the Conqueror of Aragon and took
several centuries to complete. Over-
looking the harbor in Palma, the
beautiful stained glass windows are
particularly impressive at sundown.
2. Bellver Castle, once home of the
kings of Mallorca, was erected in the
14th century. In Bellver Castle is the
Municipal Museum, which is devoted to
archaeological relics, old coins and
cameos.
3. La Lonja, a 15th century struc-
ture which was once an exchange or
trade center, now houses the Provincial
Museum of Fine Arts.
4. El Pueblo Espanol is a museum
constructed in the likeness of the
a Spanish word meaning "discovery" so
that Marriage Encounter is inviting
couples to discover their spouse in a
new way.
Avoiding distractions
The couples making a Marriage En-
counter spend a weekend away from the
distractions of everyday life. They
are encouraged to put aside jobs,
children, friends and concentrate on
talking deeply with one another.
Babysitting is provided by other
couples who have already experienced
the weekend so that this area of concern
may be lessened.
The emphasis of the Marriage Encoun-
ter is on communication between husband
and wife at the "feeling level." The
weekend experience is not designed for
problem-solving, rather as an explora-
tion of each other's feelings to com-
municate and understand one another
better.
The couple actually ' give the week-
end to each other. It is strictly a
private weekend between husband and
wife. It is not a group dynamics or
sensitivity session. The only time
couples are encouraged to share with
the group is on Friday evening when
they introduce themselves.
Marriage Encounter in Iceland is
affiliated with the National Marriage
Encounter, a Judaic-Christian movement
which is open to couples of all faiths.
The encounter is not designed to
strengthen faith, although frequently
it does. Rather, it is for couples
to go more deeply into the meaning of
their lives together.
Need for examination
There is a need for and a desire by
married couples today to examine the
meaning and presence of God in their
individual and married lives. The
National Marriage Encounter philosophy
and structure enables couples to ap-
preciate more fully the presence of
God in their lives.
Many followup and support programs
exist for couples striving to live
out the Marriage Encounter concept.
These include rap sessions, sharing
groups and circles, images, scripture
sharing and anniversary weekends.
Marriage Encounter key couples are
as follows Ray and Eileen Andrieu
2150; Terry and Paula Boyer 7437; and
John and Jodie Windbigler 4462.
Another information night will be
held at the NATO base Chapel at 8
p.m. Tuesday.
Spanish Village in Montjuich Park,
Barcelona. It is actually a whole
village, with sunny plazas and cobble
stoned streets, where each building
represents a province of Spain.
The village has restaurants, bars,
shows and shops. Local craftsmen,
such as the guitar maker, work in full
view of passers by. The best Flamenco
showcases in Mallorca may be seen in
the village.
5. Cortijo Vista Verde, a school
for bullfighters, is probably one of
the most unique tourist attractions
around. Here you will see the El
Cordobes of tomorrow; arid, if you are
brave enough, you can test your skill
against a year old bull.
Icelandic Symphony Orchestra
The last 1977 performance of the
Icelandic Symphony Orchestra will be
held Dec. 15 at the Haskolabio in Rey-
kjavik at 8:30 p.m.
J. P. Jacquillat will lead the or-
chestra in selections from Mozart,
Sveinnsson and DeFalla.
Fobert Aitken will be the guest
artist for the evening.
Tickets will be on sale at the Tour
Office from Monday until Dec. 9.

uled for Dec. 20 through Dec. 27, has
