White Falcon
Credit - it’s not that easy
Along with other members of today's
society, Navy men and women use many
different credit cards daily to pur-
chase everyday items such as gas or
clothing as well as to pay for motel-
hotel rooms and other services while
traveling on vacation, temporary duty
assignment, or a permanent change of
station.
Credit cards have become a con-
venience. Many businesses even prefer
that their customers use a credit card
instead of cash when paying for a pur-
chase since it means that large amounts
of money will not be held in the store.
But a credit card must be consid-
ered as a form of money by the holder
and must be protected with the same
care you would take if it actually
were paper money or coin.
You have help. Federal laws are
at work protecting the rights and
liabilities of the credit card hol-
der.
As the use of credit cards has
expanded over the last decade, so
has the unauthorized use of credit
cards that have been lost or sto-
len. In some instances, credit
card holders have been held liable
by the card-issuing agency for thousands
of dollars of charges that were run up
on stolen credit cards.
This led Congress to amend the Truth
In Lending Act in October, 1970, to
include certain provisions relating
to the liability and issuance of credit
cards.
Issuance-No one can be issued
a credit card unless he or she asks
for it. 'This prohibition does not
apply to the issuance of a credit card
in renewal of, or in substitution for,
an accepted card. An "accepted credit
card" is one which the holder has req-
uested and received, signed and used
for the purpose of obtaining money,
property, labor or services on credit.
Liability-In the event of the loss
or theft of a credit card, you are
liable only:
*if the card was an accepted one;
*for an amount not in excess of $50;
*if you had been notified previously
of the potential $50 liability (This
means that the card issuer must have
given you a printed notice which set
forth the pertinent facts clearly and
conspicuously.);
*if you have been provided with a
self-addressed prestamped notification
to mail to the card issuer in the event
of the loss or theft of your credit
card;
*if unauthorized use occurs before
you notified the card issuer of the loss
or theft.
Credit is a convenience, but it's
important that you don't misuses it.
Goodbye Mr. Plante
Sorry sports fans, we were unable to
bring you the usual sports page this
week.
After a decade of writing sports for
the White Falcon, Dick Plante, the base
athletic director, has retired to
California. His influence on base
sporting events will be sorely missed.
Mr. David Catling, who has just ar-
rived from Guam, will be assuming the
athletic director's position.
Sports correction
Last week in the sports story of
Supply versus AIMD it was AIMD over
Supply instead of Supply winning.
However, the score was the same with
AIMD scoring 57 points and Supply with
48 points.
