IDF Military Personnel of the Quarter to be honored Five NATO base personnel are sched- uled to be honored April 21 for their selection as the Iceland Defense Force Military Personnel of the Quarter from January to March 1978, at the IDF Headquarters at 2 p.m. To be honored during the afternoon ceremony will be Cryptologic Tech- nician (Communications) Second Class Allan S. Metzger, Aviation Storekeeper Airman Apprentice Susan M. Nelson, Lance Corporal John S. Kazanjian, Technical Sergeant Robert H. Dyster and Airman First Class Paul R. Simon. Rear Admiral Karl J. Bernstein, Commander Iceland Defense Force, will present a letter of commendation, a plaque with engraved plate and a priority one authorization on an environmental and morale flight to each military member. ALLAN S. METZGER Petty Officer of the Quarter CT02 Allan S. Metzger has been attached to the Naval Security Group Activity since his arrival in October 1976. During his tour he has filled key supervisory positions at the Hafnir and Rockville sites. CT02 Metzger is now the methods and results clerk for the communications department. "I'm responsible for all the message traffic. I make sure it's in the proper format and ensure that any errors are corrected," he ex- plained. He is also the custodian of the NSGA naval warfare publication library, re- sponsible user for classified materials systems and permanent scoop watch—pro- viding watch relief for personnel on leave, liberty or the sicklist. Commenting on his philosophy of leadership, he said, "I think honesty and letting the people who work for you know that you care are the most important things. I try to treat junior people like adults and let them know the jobs they do are appre- ciated." The 26-year-old Montana native is a member of the NSGA bowling, pistol and fast-pitch softball teams. Besides his involvement in sports, he enjoys watching television, build- ing models and collecting coins. He is accompanied on his two-year tour by his wife, Vera, and their two sons, Shane and Jason. SUSAN M. NELSON AKAA Susan M. Nelson, Sailor of the Quarter, has been assigned to the stock control division of the Naval Station Supply department since October. Working on the document distribution desk, she handles requisitions going to the supply center in Norfolk; main- tains an on-hand list of all items stocked; keeps a survey file; and assigns programs to all items that she handles, which are then keypunched and fed into a computer. Commenting on her job, the 22-year- old Navy woman said, "Since I'm filling a rated billet, I have a lot of re- sponsibility. I like being in a position where I can make decisions. Things are always changing—new instructions, new fund codes—so I have to be flexible." The Washington native plans to take college courses to further her educa- tion and to pursue her interest in literature, history and Chinese philosophy. In addition to having completed two college courses, she is presently working on two Navy correspondence courses. Much of her off-duty time is spent exercising and going to the base gym sauna. "I'm interested in physical fitness, and I think everyone in the Navy should be concerned with his personal appearance," she said. AKAA Nelson enjoys traveling and plans on using her priority one authorization when she takes leave in Spain. JOHN S. KAZANJIAN LCpl John S. Kazanjian, Marine of the Quarter, has been assigned as a watchstander on the Marine Barracks Guard Force since his arrival in July. His schedule consists of a duty day, followed by a training day, and then a day of liberty. "My job is to provide security at different places on base," he ex- plained. "I stand two six-hour watches on my duty days. In between the watches I have six hours off, giving me time to eat, work out in the weight room, catch some sleep and get my gear ready for the second watch." On training days, LCpl Kazanjian, along with the other members of his platoon, receives instruction on equipment, works on Marine Corps Institute courses and participates in physical training. The 20-year-old Massachusetts native spends some of his off-duty time playing racquetball or working out at the gym. He is a member of the Marine Barracks volleyball team and enjoys playing football, ping-pong and scuba diving. In addition to his involvement in sports, he likes to backpack and take scenic pictures. His goal for the future is to be- come a reconnaisance Marine, who is a special forces outfit member trained in diving and parachuting. ROBERT H. DYSTER The Air Force Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter Technical Sergeant Robert H. Dyster has been assigned to Air Forces Iceland since his arrival in March 1977. This includes handling film ship- ments, preparing television programm- ing, scheduling all television production work, coordinating the newsroom and production staffs and training and assigning television personnel. "My job is very challenging Television and radio are important for the morale of the people stationed here. I try to give the television audience the best product possible with the resources we have here," he stated. The 30-year-old Kansas native, a member of the Det. Eight bowling and volleyball teams, is an avid golfer. He also enjoys coaching children's sports, which gives him the opportun- ity to be involved with his son.
