Catling SOFTBALL First games started Saturday Season big hit on NATO base STARTS WITH A HIT--The Communications Station Intermediate Pitch Softball team started out with a hit in the top of the first inning. ComSta went on to down the Iceland Defense Force team 16-11 in the first game of the season. (Falcon staff photo) Youth athletic program planned The 1978 Summer Youth Athletic pro- gram is an introductory athletic program designed to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship, team work, and athletic techniques in young children. At the conclusion of each four-week session, each child should have developed an awareness of themselves in an athletic environment. The summer program will consist of swimming, volleyball, basketball, soft- ball, gymnastics, badmiton, bowling and coordination drills. Parents enrolling children in the program are advised to furnish sneakers, shorts, jeans, swimsuits and towels. During each four-week session the children will be under the direct super- vision of the assistant athletic direc- tor and staff consisting of highly qualified floor aids and instructors. Rockville downed the Supply Depart- ment, 10-2, in the first game of the 1978 Intramural Softball Season last Saturday. The tempo of the season was set early when Rockville racked up four runs in the brief, but action packed, first inning of the slow pitch game. There are three leagues in the soft- ball program this year, they include slow pitch (the largest league), Inter- mediate pitch and Ladies’ slow pitch. All totaled there are 43 separate teams in the leagues making softball one of the largest and most popular Intra- mural events on the NATO base. The breakdown of leagues has the slow pitch league with 28 teams, the intermediate pitch league with nine teams and the ladies league with six teams. In the Intermediate pitch league ComSta took the first game over IDF/CFK 16-11. NavFac took their first game 6-4 over the ComSta in ladies action. Captain Jack T. Weir, NavSta CO, threw out the first ball of the season for the slow pitch and Intermediate pitch leagues at 9 and 9:30 a.m. respec- tively. Drizzly skies threatened to postpone at least some of the 18 games scheduled, but, fortunately the rain held back making way for an excellent day of soft- ball. The Athletic Division encourages everyone to get a schedule and come out and support your favorite team.
