tfl*" fc.ve cV.s Naval Station Keflavik celebrates July 4 51 HS Parking Lot START Naval Station Keflavik is celebrating this July 4 with many funfilled events. A parade will begin at noon Tuesday, starting at the A. T. Mahan High School. The procession will wind its way down Vikingagata, Meeks Ave and end up at Hangar 885 where much of the other day's events will take place. (see map at left) Other events will be going on all day- Kicking the day off at 9 a.m. will be a golf tournament in Keflavik. A horse shoe tournament will begin at 10 a.m. near the base gym Opposite the Youth Center at 11 a.m., a tug of war will be battling it out. After the noon-time parade, the All-Star Slowpitch Softball game will take place at 1 p.m. in the Allan Shep- herd Field across from the Hobby Center. Also at this time, concession booths will open at Hangar 885. Along with these activities country western music will strike up at Hangar 885 and a boat ride sign up will be held weather permitting. The Ice and Fire Theater Group will give two 30-minute performances of "Through the Years" at 1:45 and 5:15 at Hangar 885. Starting at 2 p.m., continuous kiddie movies will be shown at the base theater. Back at Hangar 885 at 2 p.m. the Naval Station Fire Department will give a light water demonstration and fire truck rides. Family games will also start, including tire rolling - all ages; water balloon toss - all ages; back to back race teams (must be sister and brother) sore toe shoe scramble - all ages; bucket brigade (minimum one parent and son or daughter) and a shoe toss for all ages. Other family events will be human croquet - all ages; human chain race - all ages; skin the snake race - ages eight and above; obstacle race - all ages and a pie eating contest for all ages as a highlight to finalize family activities. A "Wings over Iceland" model airplane display will be shown adjacent to the Commissary Store at 2 p.m. and a model racing car track display at Hangar G85. The Midnight Sundowners will demon- strate square dancing at 2:15 p.m. at Hangar 885. Rock entertainment will then be performed next at 2:45 p.m. Judging hobby craft winning entries will be at 3 p.m. and a Filipino-American Associ- ation of Keflavik dancing display will follow at 3:30 p.m. Explorer Post 364 will give a rescue display at 4 p.m. The Ladies' All-star vs League All- star softball game will begin at 2:30 at the Allan Shepherd Field. The Officers vs Chiefs softball game will start at 4 p.m. on the same field. Country western entertainment will begin at 4:45 at Hangar 885. Adjacent; to the hangar will be an Independence Day fireworks display at 6 p.m. And finally for the teens with energy still, the Youth Center is giving a disco dance at the center from 7 p.m. to mid- night. Prizes will be given to winners for best T-shirt, best legs and a three dance contest. White&Faleon Volume 34, Number 26 Keflavik, Iceland June 30, 1978 Navy Exchange Main Retail Store to open Featuring a proposed mall retail shopping complex, the Navy Exchange Main Retail Store is scheduled to have its Grand Opening Independence Day at 10 a .m. To expedite moving into this new facility in Bldg. 869 "B" on Interna- tional Highway, the following NEX loca- tions have closed: Shoe Store, Clothing Store and Stereo Shop. The Main Retail Store will remain open tomorrow, however, while preparing for final relocation. The Cashier's Office will be closed tomorrow. Checks up to $50 may be cashed at register stations. In the new store, the Cashier's Of- fice will be situated just inside the store for patron convenience. The Main Retail Store is located on the immediate right just inside the building entrance. Across International Highway, an asphalt parking lot will accommodate approximately 150 cars. Throughout the day, the Navy Ex- change will have Red Price Ticket Specials to help kick off Grand Opening Day. Hours of operation will continue to be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Thursday night late shopping will also be offered as a customer option. The lobby and passageway will con- tain display cases which will show both seasonal and special merchandise selections on a regular basis. The Customer Service Center will be enlarged to provide better cus- tomer aid. Captain Jack T. Weir, Naval Station Commanding Officer, is scheduled to cut the ribbon for the Grand Opening cere- mony. A fashion show is also set at 1:30 p.m. to help celebrate the Grand Open- ing. This special event will tentative- ly feature five live models from Reykjavik. Personalized Services and the Geysir Room Cafeteria are slated to open at the new location in late July. (related pictures on page 3)
