’78 International Golf Classic
On a cloudy day, Icelandic golfers
won 521-572 in the 1978 Naval Station
International Golf Classic which unfold-
ed with base and Icelandic golfers com-
peting for the International Trophy.
Foursomes took to the green at
9 a.m.; by 12:30 p.m. all foresomes had
teed off.
The classic was played using the
clubs' total handicaps. After compe-
tition, the golf scores were totaled,
minus handicap. The total strokes minus
handicap determined the event winner.
The highlight of the classic was the
remarkable playing skills of the Ice-
landic youths. The teenage athletes
played superbly. Some of them have handi-
caps of seven or less.
Another classic is being arranged
for late July.
