IDF MEMBERS HONORED
The Iceland Defense Force Military
Personnel of the Quarter from April to
June are scheduled to be honored in a
ceremony at the IDF headquarters today.
They are: Air Force Staff Sergeant
Larry J. Norwood and Senior Airman James
L. Gagne, Marine Lance Corporal Ronald J.
Gray, Navy Data Systems Technician Third
Class Michael A. Morris and Builder
Third Class Nicholas R. Smith. Marine
Sergeant John M. Sternad will not be a-
vailable for the ceremony due to his
transfer to Commanding General, Landing
Force Training Center Atlantic, Little
Creek, VA.
The five Defense Force members pre-
sent for the ceremony will receive a
certificate, plaque, and authorization
for a priority one on the Naval Station
Environmental and Morale Flights. Rear
Admiral Karl J. Bernstein, Commander
Iceland Defense Force, will make the pre-
sentations in his headquarters at 2 p.m.
LARRY J. NORWOOD
SSgt. Larry J. Norwood, Air Force Non-
commissioned Officer of the Quarter, has
been attached to Operating Location AA
Detachment 1, 20th Air Defense Squadron
since April, as an Administration Spe-
cialist .
"As the chief of admin, my job is
basically management," he explained. "I
draft and type correspondence, prepare
Airman Performance Reports, Officer Eval-
uation Reports, maintain files and li-
braries, and perform general housekeeping
in the office."
Along with his primary job, SSgt. Nor-
wood performs many additional duties, in-
cluding postal clerk, classified custo-
dian, intro monitor and information NCO,
among others.
In his off-duty time the Norwich, NY,
native enjoys being outdoors, and he is
an active fisherman, hunter and camper.
He recently went on a fishing trip here
with his co-workers.
SSgt. Norwood has been working toward
a degree in business administration/man-
agement, and he now has 26 credit hours.

the Air Force NCO Academy course nine.
After finishing his one-year tour
here, SSgt. Norwood will go to a follow-
on assignment at Dover AFB, DE, where
he will be joined by his wife, Bonnie,
and their son, Billy.
JAMES L. GAGNE
Airman of the Quarter, SrA James L.
Gagne, has been assigned to the 932nd
Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron
since October, where he works at the site
power plant.
As an Electrical Power Production Spe-
cialist, he assists in maintaining the
operational readiness of the power plant
equipment. His duties at work include
monitoring the electrical distribution
systems, and operating the diesel genera-
tors which provide electrical power to
the radar site in the event of a power
failure or sustained high winds.
While stationed at his last command,
MacDill AFB, FL, SrA Gagne earned an
associate degree in liberal arts from
St. Leo College, Tampa, FL. Expressing
his belief that education is important,
he plans to continue his formal educa-
tion.
A native of Lincoln, NH, SrA Gagne
LCpl. Ronald J. Gray, IDF Marine of
the Quarter.
enjoys cold weather and snow skiing. An-
other sport he likes is soccer, which he
played in high school.
Commenting on his philosophy of life,
he said, "I like to be happy. I've en-
joyed my tour here so far because it's a
mellow place. People get along really
well here at the site."
JOHN M. STERNAD
Sergeant John M. Sternad, Marine Non-
commissioned Officer of the Quarter, was
attached to the Marine Barracks for one
year. He was transferred last month to
his new assignment at Little Creek, VA.
As Sergeant of the Guard, Sgt. Ster-
nad was responsible for the men assigned
to his section. Some of his duties in-
cluded: Inspecting his men before and
during their guard watches, ensuring they
were prepared for personnel, locker, bunk
and room inspection, providing his men
with professional and personal guidance,
and giving training lectures.
Sgt. Sternad, a reconnaissance marine,
was active in sports to maintain himself

cer of the Quarter.
in good physical condition. He was a
member of the Marine Barracks intramural
softball and volleyball , teams, and he
spent off-duty time lifting weights,
jogging, swimming and bowling.
The Jersey City, NJ, native also en-
joyed reading adventure stories and lis-
tening to music in his spare time.
RONALD J. GRAY
Marine of the Quarter, Ronald J. Gray,
has been assigned to the Marine Barracks
since March, where he is the bookkeeper
for the Marine Club. Prior to his assign-
ment here, LCpl. Gray attended accounting
school at Quantico, VA, and he finished
second in his class.
His responsibilities as the club book-
keeper include maintenance of the account
books and associated paperwork. Due to
a shortage of personnel at the Marine Bar-
racks, LCpl. Gray has also performed as
a cook, cashier, receiving and storeroom
clerk.
"I like my job a lot; the people here
are good to work with. I try to take
things one step at a time. I came up
here with a good attitude, which I think
has helped me to get where I am now," he
said.
A native of Alexandria, MN, LCpl. Gray
is interested in sports, and plans on
playing for the Marine Barracks intramural
football and basketball teams. He also
enjoys swimming and weighlifting.
An associate degree in accounting is
the education goal LCpl. Gray has set for
himself. He earned six credit hours

while stationed in Virginia, and he plans
on taking college level courses here.
MICHAEL A. MORRIS
DS3 Michael A. Morris, Petty Officer
of the Quarter,.has been attached to the
Naval Facility (NavFac) since March. He
is assigned to the Electronics/Engineer-
ing Division as a computer peripheral
equipment repairman.
"I perform preventive maintenance on
the computers and associated equipment,
which ensures the operational readiness
of the systems," he explained.
In addition to his regular job, DS3
Morris also stands a technician-on-call
watch. This watch, which is normally
stood by a more senior person, provides
on-call assistance to the Oceanographic
Watch Officer.
The native of Hialeah, FL, is an ac-
tive member of NavFac's intramural rac-
quetball, volleyball and softball teams.
With aspirations for a religious
career, DS3 Morris is enrolled in cor-
respondence courses with Bible Baptist
College, Springfield, MO. He is also
involved with the Keflavik Fundamental
Baptist Church, and he teaches adult
Bible study.
NICHOLAS R. SMITH
Sailor of the Quarter, Nicholas R.
Smith, who was promoted to Builder Third
Class July 16, has been attached to
Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA)
since November.
As the only builder assigned to NSGA,
BU3 Smith has worked on his own, using
his experience as a craftsman to com-
plete a backlog of work requests through-
out the command.
The native of Sidney, NY, has been a-
ble to utilize his associate degree in
commercial art, which he received from
Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica,
NY, to plan and design projects, in ad-
dition to performing the actual con-
struction.
"As a builder I have the opportunity
to use my abilities and learn something
new from each job. I hope to build my
own home someday, and I'll be able to do
that from the training I've gotten in
the Navy," he commented.
BU3 Smith spent many off-duty hours
working on the decorating committee for
the annual NSGA Ball. He is also a
member of the NSGA BEQ Advisory Board,
the Command Resource Study Group, and the
intramural volleyball and softball teams.
